drew03cmc Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 I am looking to get into a smallmouth or two this Monday. Can I get some advice on lures for this time of year? I haven't chased smallmouth this early in the year before. Andy
Mitch f Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Since the water temps are around 50, I only bring 3 lures with me...a jig, a jerkbait, and a crankbait. I thought you were only a fly fisherman? "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
drew03cmc Posted March 3, 2012 Author Posted March 3, 2012 No. I use spin tackle, baitcasting tackle and the fly rod. I am not a snob. I actually prefer my casting gear, since I learned to use it, for bass. I've caught thousands of bass on the fly, however, that isn't always the easiest or most productive way to fish for me. Excuse the idiocy Mitch, what would you consider a jerkbait? Would it be something like a Rogue or perhaps something like a soft plastic fluke? If a fluke, what color? Andy
ozark trout fisher Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 I've been using beadheaded woollies (black, white, and olive) and little marabou jigs on the fly rod lately with some success. Fish them real slow and deep and you should catch a few. I don't think they're interested in chasing anything down that's moving very fast now. Obviously wait for the afternoon of a nice warm day if you can, and good luck!
fishinwrench Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Excuse the idiocy Mitch, what would you consider a jerkbait? Have you recently bumped your head, or are you truly that green? I was under the impression that you had been fishing awhile.
drew03cmc Posted March 3, 2012 Author Posted March 3, 2012 I'll be up here in Kansas on a creek in the Flint Hills chasing spotted bass and largemouth. It should prove to be fun. Andy
drew03cmc Posted March 3, 2012 Author Posted March 3, 2012 Have you recently bumped your head, or are you truly that green? I was under the impression that you had been fishing awhile. Not with gear. I was primarily a fly fisherman for four or five years. I have only recently gotten into gear fishing again. I did just bump my head though...darn kids. Andy

I love the Flint Hills area. I've fished there a few times, some very nice spotted bass streams out that way. Fun stuff.
Stoneroller Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 deer hair jig and a jerkbait is all you need with this water temp. Fish On Kayak Adventures, LLC. Supreme Commander 'The Dude' of Kayak fishing www.fishonkayakadventures.com fishonkayakadventures@yahoo.com
jdmidwest Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 I would go with an ultralight and a rooster tail with gold blades and yellow, white, or black tail. Or tube jigs. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
