I am looking to get into a smallmouth or two this Monday. Can I get some advice on lures for this time of year? I haven't chased smallmouth this early in the year before.

Since the water temps are around 50, I only bring 3 lures with me...a jig, a jerkbait, and a crankbait. I thought you were only a fly fisherman?

No. I use spin tackle, baitcasting tackle and the fly rod. I am not a snob. I actually prefer my casting gear, since I learned to use it, for bass. I've caught thousands of bass on the fly, however, that isn't always the easiest or most productive way to fish for me.

Excuse the idiocy Mitch, what would you consider a jerkbait? Would it be something like a Rogue or perhaps something like a soft plastic fluke? If a fluke, what color?

I've been using beadheaded woollies (black, white, and olive) and little marabou jigs on the fly rod lately with some success. Fish them real slow and deep and you should catch a few. I don't think they're interested in chasing anything down that's moving very fast now. Obviously wait for the afternoon of a nice warm day if you can, and good luck!

Have you recently bumped your head, or are you truly that green?

I was under the impression that you had been fishing awhile. :)

I'll be up here in Kansas on a creek in the Flint Hills chasing spotted bass and largemouth. It should prove to be fun.

Not with gear. I was primarily a fly fisherman for four or five years. I have only recently gotten into gear fishing again. I did just bump my head though...darn kids.

I love the Flint Hills area. I've fished there a few times, some very nice spotted bass streams out that way. Fun stuff.

I would go with an ultralight and a rooster tail with gold blades and yellow, white, or black tail. Or tube jigs.
