Brian Sloss Posted March 29, 2012 Author Posted March 29, 2012 Justin and Brandon caught the whites above the fork with Bryant Creek at and between the last two shoals before it seriously deepens. Justin had one good sized white on that got away. I did get my first walleye on a fly rod too. I was blanked on whites. Saw plenty of them in the shoals, just could not get them interested and I threw the fly box at them. Brandon went back closer to dusk and probably tore them up, he really seemed to know his stuff when it comes to their behavior and when and how to do the best catching them and mid day does not seem to be the best, but that was when I could go. The thought process was striper or hybrid, then catfish, then carp, then maybe a big brown, then definitely CARP! www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
Wayne SW/MO Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 I'll bet he got your heart pumping. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
laker67 Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Great fish Brian, always a treat on the long rod. I got back into targeting carp and buffalo last year here at loz. I had forgot what a treat they are to catch. I bait them with dog food. When they start coming in, almost any fly will catch them. They are very aggressive when they smell food.
Arofishing Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 What a fish. That must have been awesome on 5 wt. I haven't caught any decent sized carp since I was a kid, did it put up much of a fight or was it like dragging in a big, reluctant log?
Wayne SW/MO Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 did it put up much of a fight or was it like dragging in a big, reluctant log? I haven't caught a carp that didn't put up a good fight. While there initial run isn't anything like a steelheads, I've heard it's not unlike a bonefish. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Justin Spencer Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 When I lived and guided on the North Fork, I spent each spring fly fishing for whites, stripers and whipers above the bridge. After hooking a 20-pound striper in the current, I had a 10-weight Sage built for it. Do the stripers and whiper still run with the whites? They sure do, along with lots of walleye, and monster shad. Members Aaron Mills Posted March 30, 2012 Members Posted March 30, 2012 every time i catch a carp or a sucker, i have that is it a huge BROWN no its a carp/sucker moment. Not really disappointment, but they feel so heavy it gets your juices flowing for sure. Great Fish sounds well earned! I would've written the post as if i was targetting carp exclusively, but I have no shame.
