If I were you I would look at a Guide 147. It would be a good boat for a couple of youngsters. It is heavy, but they should be able to handle it. It shouldn't break you buying a good used one either.

That's just what I was thinking Wayne!

The guide 147 is what I've been using for a canoe, so I got them covered. Its got lots of scratches, but it's a tough boat that they should be able to use for many years.

If you are interested my Uncle has a old town guide 14 7 in very good shape that just hangs in his shed, rarely uses, will get you a price.

Thanks griz, but I got one already.

Like Wayne mentioned it could be used for a solo. I tried mine out as a solo a few times, but with the extra weight combined with lots of log jambs in my creeks it wasn't what I wanted.

If someone floated larger rivers it would work out great.

No tandem canoe works as well solo as a solo canoe. The difference in paddling a solo and paddling any tandem by yourself is like night and day. Yep, you can paddle that 147 solo, but it'll be a barge to paddle compared to a decent solo canoe. If you want to do a lot of solo fishing, get a solo, period.

Awesome thread here. I narrowed my selection down to the Guide 119, Mohawk Solo 13, or Pack (if found used). Obviously the 119 has the advantage price wise. However, the Mohawk and the Pack have the advantage weight wise. Realistically I'll probably settle for the 119.

One of the greatest disadvantages down here in the Ozarks is a lack of real paddlesport retailers. The kind that are set up on lakes and/or rivers where you can test out the products before your buy them.

I figure whatever I get, I'll likely get a T-Handle converter like this: http://www.mohawkpaddle.com/bentshaftpaddles.aspx, and keep my current kayak paddle to use to paddle upstream, then just convert for the downstream ride.

Got a day off coming up in a week and a half on a Tuesday. God-willing, I'll be able to get up to Kansas City and check out some boats. I'll be sure to call first though.

Great idea, I bought some Mohawk paddles last year through two brother canoe at a excellent price when they made their big order. May have to buy more, like the converter idea.

Best deal I have seen on a Pack, would have to have double to sell mine?

Glad someone here got it. I had about given up on my pack, priced it a couple times last fall. After getting Al's advice, moved the seat 1 inch higher, 2 1/2 inches forward finally took it out today.... Happy Camper. The only issue is I was so tickled with it my wife wanted to try it with the kayak paddle..... may have to get another one, She loved it.
