Billfo Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 Everyone has their own preference & im sure many knots will work , but my specific question is, Is the PALOMAR knot good for florocarbon ? Thanks. Email me Red-Right-Returning is for quitters !
motoman Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 I've heard some explanations why it may not be on some molecular level; or some scientific reason I can't comprehend. But, I've used it for years on fluorocarbon with zero problems.......and will keep using it for its simplicity and reliability. - I thought I read ole KVD swears by it for everything???........but dont quote me on that.:-).........maybe just my imagination.:-P
CaptainJoe Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 The Palomar knot is OK for fluorocarbon; however, in the Knot Wars conducted by the North American Fishing Club, the Fish n Fool knot was determined to be better than the Palomar knot. I still use the Palomar knot for drop shot rigs because the knot helps the hook to stand out 90 degrees from the main line; however, I use the Fish n Fool knot for all others, except the King Sling knot for top water loop knots. Billfo Posted May 20, 2012 Author Posted May 20, 2012 One thing I DID hear about the Palomar & florocarbon was to be careful NOT to cross the line over itself on the knot.. If that makes sence.. Anyway- Thanks for the replies.. Email me Red-Right-Returning is for quitters !
Feathers and Fins Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Let me answer it by this. 185pnd Tarpon, 500lb Bull Shark, 65pnd Wahoo and Countless other fish all with Floro and a Palomar knot. I do not care what any scientist or fishing magazine or club says! I use what I KNOW wrks and has worked for years and that is simply this. 1. Everytime you hook a fish check the line for abbrasions, if it is roughed up cut off 2 feet of line and re-tie 2. Check your line often and re-tie as needed 3. When fishing heavy cover Check the line and re-tie as needed. If you check your line and knots often and re-tie as needed then one knot is as good as another IMO. It is a maintenance issue no diffrent then any other. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
jmes Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 I agree, I think checking you line often is the more important factor. I for one on a average fishing trip I will retie several time through the day ( 15 to 20 ) I was reading about I believe Edwin Evers and he retie's after catching every fish caught just my 2 cents

It is a maintenance issue no diffrent then any other. IMHO, if that was the case, we would only need one knot and not the 1,000's that have been developed. Sure it is a maintenance issue as it is with all knots. However, the mechanics of how a knot is tied is very important as well. abkeenan Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 I will chime in. I have been tying the trilene knot since I really started fishing about 15+ years ago. It has been a tremendous knot and easy to tie. I thought about changing to a different knot just because of all the knot wars testing. Well recent tests show that the trilene knot is #1 on mono and it also beat the fish n' fool and palomar knot on both mono and fluoro lines. So I see no point in changing now. I just started using braid just for A-Rigs and have 65# powerpro. Well I hooked a fish and it took me into a tree and I couldn't get that line/knot to break for anything and had to end up cutting it so the trilene knot held great on braid also. All of these combined have led me to just stick with the trilene knot for all line types. Only time I tie a palomar is drop shotting for the hook to stand point up in the correct position. My 2 cents.

Joe it is because people keep trying to improve or find a something else just because. For line to Hook if the drag is set right and the line and knot are checked regularly then one is as good as another. It is kinda like Decoys for duck hunting. You can buy and use good ones that work for 110.00 a dozen or you can buy ones that are designed to catch the hunter for 400.00 a dozen. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Quillback Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 I use the Palomar with floro, works fine for me, and it's so easy to tie. Moisten the knot before clinching it tight - very important with floro for any knot.
