I was looking at some of my rods the other day as they were leaning against a wall in the garage. And it made me curious, do any rods have any memory that they may retain that shape of leaning against the wall? I am assuming no, but I don't think I would like to ruin a rod finding out.

I've wondered that before, too, but I decided not to find out. You gotta think on a long enough timeline, just about any material is going to have some memory.

They will develop a curve if you leave them like that long enough. A friend of mine left an ugly stick in the trunk of his car for a long time and it became permanently curved. He still caught fish with it, but he looked pretty ridiculous fishing with it.

I try to hang up my spares, but still have several that are in my rotation that get stacked in a corner. I try to just rotate them around every couple of weeks. Never had an issue with memory in 45+ years of fishing so I guess my madness works.

I dont want to find my rods all bent outta shape, that'll suck. Do you think certain conditions make it worse? Like humidity or heat? Like leaving it in an oven-like car for a couple days.

I don't think a couple of days would bother anything, probably not a couple of weeks even. And it one would happen to get "memory", just stack it the other way for a while.

I think the epoxy can take a set eventually. I would imagine they would have to be left undisturbed for years to see it.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Bamboo and old fiberglass rods would take a set easily. Heat will accelerate the process. Modern graphite rods are almost completely immune from this. But I would not leave one bent and in the trunk of my car all summer.
