ollie Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Don't be fooled by the lower Elk not getting it's fair share of party goers! Twice a year they hold a motorcycle rally and that can get pretty wild! There is only one outfitter on the lower Elk and I wouldn't trust that old coot as far as I could throw him. I have been ripped off twice by him on different things in the past so now I just stay away from his place. Plus the fact the campground is run down and not well kept. Someone said earlier you can't have your cake and eat it too. I think that is true around here in the summertime. Redmons on Indian isn't bad, but there isn't enough water to float Indian right now. Nick Williams Posted June 17, 2012 Author Posted June 17, 2012 So, I went ahead an floated the Elk River just to see how it would be. We did an 8m float with Eagles Nest outfitter. The first 4 miles weren't bad all. The river was nice and the other people floating were just families in canoes. However when we got to about halfway the party started, I definitely didn't realize how bad it would be. It was absolutely ridiculous. Definitely WILL NOT float the Elk on Saturday during the summer again, not will I ever take the youth group on a weekend. So, my next question. Does the Elk clear up quite a bit during the week? And not just the floaters but the beach/gravel bar dwellers as well? Or is this just a party scene no matter what? - Nick
Justin Spencer Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Not sure how everyone could have made it any clearer about how your experience would be. Sometimes people just have to learn for themselves. I see it all the time here, people ask for advice, go against it and then realize we were right. Once burnt lesson learnt. Nick Williams Posted June 17, 2012 Author Posted June 17, 2012 Well it wasn't that I didn't believe you guys as to the fact that it was a party river, I just didn't realize how intense it really is. I mean it really is hard to even grasp till you see it in person. Another side of the coin was that we got my dad a kayak for fathers day so he wanted to try it out as well. - Nick
troutbum479 Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 The Elk can be completely different during the week. I've floated on a Wednesday without another boat the whole float. Some days like Fridays can be pretty busy, but not like the weekends. To avoid the crowds I wade fish the late afternoons or early mornings. The best bet is to wait till late September or early October to float ( if there's any water). . arkmoflyfishing.blogspot.com http://okietroutbum.blogspot.com/
