I think they prefer live bait, but will take other bait. I personally haven't heard of one, even a small one, taken on stink bait. My GS has caught some small ones on worms, but live little perch has produced better fish.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

I got a 15lb Flathead this spring on an old stinky minnow i netted the day before, but usually i get all my big ones off big sunfish about the length of my hand when I am running lines. A good easy to find bait around here is shad entrails you can find them at just about any bait shop in the freezer.

In March about 15 yrs ago I caught a 52 lb. flathead on a 1 oz white sp.bait down below Ashers. I was jigging the spinnerbait around standing timber. I have photos tho I haven't digitalized them. Anybody got a larger flathead on a lure? They are marvelous gamefish and fight like the devil. Since then I caught a 10 pounder on plastics while fishing a small night tournament out of Cape fair. I caught a 8 lb. channel last week @ night on a black spinnerbait off Indian point. I can't be the only one tangling with these brutes..............

I have always thought the same thing. My grandfather told me that the flatheads will only go after live bait and that is why they taste better than the channels/blues/etc because those are more or a scavenger and will eat dead or rotten meat/fish. But there are a lot of "old timer" claims and tales that really have no factual/scientific proof just hearsay handed down through generations. Sometime true, sometimes not. Would like to hear from a biologists if it is true or not.

A lot of the "oltimers" have forgoten more than a biologist will ever know about what it takes to catch fish. I'd take the advise from an ol' timer anyday! Nothing against bioligist's. I am friends with many a few of them. They are all great guys.....but don't overlook the knowledge of an ol'timer.

I caught a 10 lb. channel last spring on a Senko, and it seems I catch a couple of channels a year while bass fishing. Never caught a flathead however.

No doubt the babies, -5# or so, will take cut, but a big flat head needs a lot of food and to many have been caught on live perch to second guess. Exceptions don't make a pattern.

I agree. Was just saying sometimes old "wives tales" have no scientific support. Some of the home remedies that my grandparents have told me they did when they were young were just insane. I remember my grandfather he told me that he had the top of his foot peeled back when he got it smashed in between a loading dock and a truck and he said his parents slathered bacon grease in the wound. I can't imagine that being good. Just one of many examples that make no sense. On a fishing related note I have also heard that if the cows in the pasture are laying down during the day the fish aren't biting....not sure if that one is true or not. Would save me a lot of time if the cows could be a determining factor as to weather to stay home or get out on the water.

i don' know about the cows but i have heard that if the deer are moving the fish are biting and i kinda tend to lean toward believing that it is an interesting concept i know a few weeks ago i was night fishing and catching them pretty good and it got late so i went home and i probably saw ten deer along the way grazing and crossing the road so.... ya never know
