Feathers and Fins Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 I was talking to a buddy of mine today and he was talking about catching Tarpon in freshwater, nothing super news for people who know about that but got me thinking. How cool would it be for them to be in some of the smaller lakes as a sport fish with a C@R only on them. I would love to see a few stocked in some of the lakes for that oppertunity to again tie into the King. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
drew03cmc Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Isn't the water too cold in the winter? It isn't like there is great fluctuation in their native waters, is there? Andy
Feathers and Fins Posted July 1, 2012 Author Posted July 1, 2012 Not sure never heard of anyone trying it... but they do live in the cold at some points but how long can they take it would be the question. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
drew03cmc Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I would be all for it if there were a lake they could survive in, say for instance Thomas Hill, with the warmwater discharge the lake has from its power plant, or other similar waters. I don't think they could live in anything resembling LOZ or Truman for a winter. Andy
Feathers and Fins Posted July 1, 2012 Author Posted July 1, 2012 It would probably need to be warm water discharge lakes for sure. But they can take down to 40 before dieing. So possibly even medium size and depth lakes might. I am suprised it hasnt been tried. I know Baramuni <sp> are raised in central FL and they do good even in the cold snaps. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
kevthebassman Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 That'd be neat, for sure. I don't know if it's possible, but it would be a nice treat to catch one in MO.
Justin Spencer Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Yeah, but are they any good to eat? No what do Tarpon feed on? Anything they want! Feathers and Fins Posted July 1, 2012 Author Posted July 1, 2012 Actually they are good to eat but what you have to do to get one from water to table is a pain in the transom lol.. I had one in Costa Rica and was awesome but the way the prepared it was more like cajun gumbo and you know what they say about gumbo... Prey wise, for freshwater they love shiners and shad, so my guess would be the same things stripers are eating and they would be in the same areas of the lake as stripers would. And they think the bama rig made for great profits for bait shops wait till anglers started fishing for poon and lost gear lol. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
