hank franklin Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 ... is the pristine floating conditions on the middle Meramec. My cousin and I and kids did 14 miles in Stanton - St. Clair area this weekend and saw two jet boats the entire way, and one canoe. Incredible. The river was in excellent float-fishing shape, and the fishing was good too. More spotted bass than we could eat by the evening fish fry. Quiet quiet night by campfire. I wish the drought would break like anybody but man, to have the river free of jet boats on a July Saturday-Sunday is a treasure.

hank franklin Posted July 17, 2012 Author Posted July 17, 2012 We tried. Lighting didn't strike twice though. Bonus points for anyone who can name the gorgeous spot in top photo.
Smalliebigs Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 shoot Hank....anybody who has fished below Sand Ford knows that spot, it aint no seceret.
Brian K. Shaffer Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 That's good looking fishin' water... no doubt. Are all the bugs still coming off as they should in the lower water ? Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
hank franklin Posted July 17, 2012 Author Posted July 17, 2012 Gee Smallbigs, I thought I'd discovered the place. Brian, S. you must be talking fly-fishing language. Not sure about the bugs. One thing of note regarding the fishing is our catch was about 80 to 90 percent smallmouth. Smallmouth were abundant and looking good.
UnCivE Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 I'm seein the same thing.. feels like I have my section of river to myself. I saw one jet boat on Friday night, and I could hear the conversation as they came upon the next shallow spot "There ain't no water left up here! I think we are gonna have to fish here." Right now, if you can't manually drag your boat, you ain't fishin' some spots.
Greasy B Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 I seen some jet dudes beat the crap out of their boats on Piney this weekend. I'd say there are at least four boats that will spend the rest of the summer parked In driveways. Blazerman Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 Know that cave really well. When I grew up we had the last cabin on the river at Twin Springs which was just upstream from there. My cousin and I would wade down and explore it often. The fishing around there was always really good. Caught many fish at the cove right across from the cave. Use to sit on our dock and admire the view of the river and that bluff. Did you check out the spring just down from there?
