it was many years ago, before mdc made it a blue ribbon trout stream. an acquaintance that grew up in the area told me there was trout in the stream so I went. was using an ultralight with 4# line and a missouri night crawler[i know I'm going to he$$] . after a hard battle brought the fish to the bank but still in the water, laid my rod next to her to take a measurement. when I got home I measured where the fish was on the rod and it was almost 22". I never took the fish out of the water and watched her swim away. it is a memory I will always treasure.

No problem with your method here bud. I've caught and brought many trout home with a nightcrawler.

I love to eat them.

Especially Steelhead from Oregon. And that's happening late next month. Kings are fair game too as they'll be in season. Can't wait!

Uh... times have changed as you know. No crawlers will be used.

Dennis,

Where did you go on the McCloud? I'll be moving to California in a few weeks and would certainly appreciate any info you could give about fishing there.

Forgive me, as I do not know. What is the taboo about nightcrawlers and trout? I have only used artificial the few times I have trout fished.

Not a thing, it is all part of trout fishing.

I think the taboo in this case relates to the fact that Crane is NOW designated a blue ribbon fishery. Bait fishing isn't allowed.

More generally, I'd say any taboo surrounding bait fishing for trout has to do with them being very selective, and bait being a lazy/cheap way to catch a fish that can otherwise be quite difficult.

That and all fly fishermen are snobs ;).

One more point is that trout tend to swallow bait (nightcrawlers, soft plastics, and such) deep into their gullet, significantly increasing the odds of mortality.

Artificial lures (and particularly flies) are most commonly hooked into the mouth, making it much safer to play and successfully release.

Snobishly,
