When Fishing/hiking, Do You Carry A Handgun?

I was wondering how many people carry while hiking/fishing, whether here or elsewhere. If you do carry, what do you carry and why?

I've been venturing out more and more by myself in MO, as well as going on a trip to RMNP in the fall as well as WY next year, where I'll likely be fishing solo. I've been looking at a Ruger p95 because it's inexpensive and gets good reviews, and I have a few Rugers already and never had any issues.

Yeah, the only reason I'd consider one in MO is to protect myself from bad people. Can't think of any animal I'm afraid of in the Ozarks. Out West...well, the only real danger is grizzlies in some areas, and nobody in their right mind depends upon a handgun to take care of grizzly problems. And I'm a lot less scared of people out here in Montana than in MO.

So no, I don't carry.

Yup, always have my pistol with me in my boat.

A few years ago I was out fishing by myself in the middle of the week and I had an unpleasant encounter with some meth cooks on a gravel beach. They were actually tucked under some trees off the beach but there was no mistaking the smell. Once they saw me floating by the scrambled to grab their weapons and walked out on the beach in a threatening manner. They both had long guns and never really pointed them at me but they wanted to be sure I saw them.

One said something like “what’s up” and I said nothing “just doing a little fishing” and he said “catching anything?”. The other one was glaring at me the whole time and finally said “you never saw nothing here and we don’t want to see you again”. I said “no problem. I don’t plan on coming back.”

I was a little freaked out to say the least. Once I got a ways away from them I tried my cell phone and, of course, had no signal.

When I finally did get a signal and called the Franklin county sheriff, they asked where I had seen them. I couldn’t really tell them exactly where I had seen them. All I could do was give them general area. She asked if they had a boat and I told her I hadn’t seen one on the beach. So they weren’t really too interested since the chances of them finding them were pretty slim.

I told myself after that it was time to start carrying and I got my CC not long after and always carry my pistol now.

It depends on where I am fishing. If I am in a very public place with a well lit ramp close to civilization, I don't worry about it. If I am in a remote spot up a river or creek down a dirt road in the middle of BFE Oklahoma, I have one on me. I had a couple uneasy encounters with pit bulls and meth heads at the access a couple summers ago and since then I've had a small .380 to carry when I'm in those places.

Before anyone starts with the "what you going to do with that peashooter?" comments. It's the one I will carry. I don't want a big one because I couldn't conceal it as easy and it would be to cumbersome in a pair of shorts, so the one I have with me is better than the one I would leave in the truck.
