jdmidwest Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Interesting little local story that is drawing some statewide attention. KKK wants to put leaflets on cars in the Cape Girardeau area later this month. They feel the statue that prohibits this is a violation of their Freedom of Speech. I personally don't care who it is, I don't want any crap placed on my personal property. Even if it is parked in a public parking place, it is still my personal property and I don't want anyone monkeying with it. I think most feel the same way. They could damage the wiper, scuff the paint, or if it blows off it litters the lot where they do it causing more problems for the persons that own those parking lots. I would feel the same way if it was a church, pizza place, or a gunshow. They are placing advertisement for their gain on my personal property and I respect the law that prohibits it. Our law allows it with the owners consent. I really don't see how the ACLU could see it any other way. If they want to get the word out, mail it, post it on public bulletin boards, stand there and hand out flyers person to person, get a billboard, or take out a radio ad like all other businesses that solicitate advertisement. What they are distributing is pure advertising like all of the rest, not free speech. There is a monetary gain for them in the form of new membership dues. Lets watch and see what happens with this one. They have won out in a few other places. http://www.semissourian.com/story/1891713.html "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Jack Jones Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 I used to get leaflets on my car all the time when I was at college from party promoters and such. Never from the Klan though. The worst is when I come home from work and there's crap like that on my front door. I've had political ones around here. It's an annoyance at best, a downright offensive pamphlet at worse. And thanks for telling the world no one's home. Pamphlets/leaflets should be handed out or offered to be taken...and that's it. jdmidwest Posted September 8, 2012 Author Posted September 8, 2012 You don't really own the mailbox, the government does. It is a Federal offense to shove something in one without postage. Chief Grey Bear Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Of course you own it. It is also a federal offense to take a pot shot at that plane buzzing your deerstand but the Feds don't own the plane. Chief Grey Bear Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 If the Feds owned it, there would be a whole book of regs on its placement and such. You are free to do anything you want to them. You. Can even take a ball bat to of you want. As long as it is yours of course. A long time ago someone I knew put a farm cat in a nieghbors rural mail box and got to spend a lot of time living free of charge in a stae institution I think it was Bellefontaine Farms in St Louis County of course that was about 55 years ago. I have used rural mailboxes living in the suberbs and have gotten an OK from the PO. We opted a long time ago for the rural on the post Mailbox so the letters will fit in with the catalogs and advertising.
