Bill Babler Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 I just love and respect KVD. Did not mean it to sound other wise. He made the best statement I have ever heard a pro-fisherman make. "Don't buy anything I or any other fisherman endorse just because we use it. They pay us." Question. has KVD ever won a Tournament on Table Rock Lake? I cannot find it if he has, but I'm sure I'm missing something, as he as won most everywhere and he has fished here so many times. I can find 16 tournaments with the best finish of 4th, and as I stated an average finish of 28th. He may have won something that is not in the BASS archives or the Elite Series archrives. Maybe a Busch event or some type of a shootout or another type of an even that I just cannot find. Seems like I remember a few years ago there was something he was in contention with fishing a jerkbait pattern on cedar trees here. He does love our cedar trees. Very interesting. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
Jeremy Rasnick Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 Professional fishermen usually don't make good guides, what they can catch, most of their clients cannot. Of course there are always exceptions. But, when they struggle, and will not look at where the majority of the fish are and what they want, it adds to the pain. One execption to this is a man by the name of John Sappington. Top notch guy and top notch guide. He teaches his clients many other tactics than the dropshot for 14" kys. He is an great example of a professional fisherman who has firgured out the Rock to put his clients on quality fish.
Champ188 Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 Amen to both Jeremy and Bill. Guiding and derby fishing are polar opposites. One is all about quantity and the other all about quality. It's a rare fellow indeed who can pull off both. Yes, a lot of pro anglers started out as guides (Larry Nixon, Tommy Martin and Mark Davis to name a few). As I recall, Nixon and Martin even continued guiding after starting their derby careers. But that was in the 1970s and 80s when tournament fishing simply would not pay the bills regardless of how well a guy did. As BASS purses grew and daily tournament limits shrunk — first from 15 to 10, then 10 to 7, then 7 to the current 5 — Nixon, Martin and later Davis quickly learned that they had to stop thinking like guides and start targeting five quality bites a day.
