The family and I are making a photo trip on Saturday in the National Riverway area. We decided to limit hiking in order to hit multiple spots. I'm going to start at Big Spring and work my way back. Are there any good photo ops that I missed? Also are there any good overlooks that one can get to from the road with little hiking? Thanks in Advance.

  1. Big Spring

  2. Rocky Falls

  3. Klepzig Mill

  4. Blue Spring

  5. Alley Mill

  6. Round Spring Mill

Welch Spring & Hospital is a nice short hike and a must see...plus there is a nice overlook on K between Akers & Welch. Its a 45 minute drive north from were your talking about. Best scenery is on the river though..Pulltite Spring, Cave Spring, Flying W, Medlock...hundreds of other spots.

Well, had a great trip. We camped at Huzzah Valley and it was 95% empty. We ended up going to Alley Spring, Rocky Falls, and Blue Spring before we ran out of time. Alley is simply a cool place. We spent the most time there. My 10 year old daughter did her first drawing with high quality drawing pencils, and it was a lot more "mature" then I was expecting. She is no Al, but he has a few years on her. Only problem, her idiot dad didn't buy spray coating, and it was smudged out by the time we got to the next place. The daughter really enjoyed climbing all over rocky falls, and they are a lot bigger then I imagined from the pics. I don't know what to say about Blue Springs... I don't ever remember seeing something with that depth of blue in nature before, really a special place.

Got to fish for an hour and half in the park and got two smallies with one to hand. Nothing of size, but not a lot of good water in front of the campground. Saw turkey, deer, and one bald eagle (at least the butt end of it). My wife got some awesome pics of the weekend. I hope to post them soon. Thanks for all the advice.

You're right about Blue Spring. I've always considered it one of the two most spectacular places within the Riverways, the other being Jam-up Cave. Sure, Big Spring is more impressive, but the setting of Blue Spring and that indescribable blue of the spring pool make it something special. Supposedly, the Indians called it the "Spring of the Summer Sky", which I think is a much better name than one of a dozen or more "Blue Springs" around the Ozarks...but I don't think we see summer skies with that color of blue anymore, too much stuff in the air.

Those weren't for the slimy fish. That was her way of getting out of trouble for not bringing her gloves from the camper. She said they worked just fine until they filled with water. Got to love a 10 year old's brain.
