Yep great site. I don't mind reading through the other discussions. If I only wanted fishing reports I could rely on MDC and other sites. Those are nice, but I want that "on the stream" feeling I get from this forum.

An occasional discussion/argument is healthy.

I say as long as you get hits and people for the MOST part are cordial then don't change a thing!

I think that some of the drama is good now

I would like to think though that the people could read this forum and want to have a civil conversation on here, that does not always happen. Since I posted this there have been several people try tear me down personaly and I do not appreciate it.

I have only fly fished for a couple of years

lbt,

Drama is good? Did not like the Drama before, but it is good now? Make up your mind, or are you playing on both sides to get a higher approval rating.

Now your offended by what people have posted on this topic which you started? You were not very courtious in your previous posts on other topics, I am sure you offended them, but they are not poutting about it, like you are. Why should you be treated differently than those you have degraded? A number of us do have civil conversations here, as well as give each other a hard time and laugh about it. Some topics are informative, some are arguementive, and some are just waaaaaaayyyyyyy out there; the people participating on this open forum is why it is so diverse, with a ton of accessable information thrown in.

For only fly fishing for a couple of years, you seem pretty opinionated about your feelings in the posts you have previously made.

Here is a suggestion for you to try, now that the silver spoon has been yanked out of your mouth. Start all over on this forum, introduce yourself, your fly fishing goals, if any, and what you would like to learn from this open forum. Think about your posts, before you post them, and expect to be critised on something. Maybe, you will find your way into a fly fishing circle, meet new friends and achieve the fly fishing goals you have set for yourself.

Detailed fishing reports? some will be, some will not be. Best thing to do is take all the information you can obtain and put together your own favorite methods, flies, and locations, with specifics on time of year, water levels, and weather, being factors on how you approach certain fishing situations. Spend time on the water and watch how the fish react to your fly and presentation, not just going down and beating a foam on the water trying to catch fish. Do not become an OUTLET fisher, like so many have new to the sport at Taneycomo, you will not learn anything there and there is no sport to it. Outlet fishing is just a waste of time and the tactics you pick up to effectively fish them will not benefit you anywhere else. I can gaurantee you that those who pound the outlets regularly would get spanked at the North Fork of the White River, San Juan River, and many many others.

Good luck in which avenue you take, that decission is up to you.

It looks like things have been interesting the last few days while out of town! First off I would also like to THANK Phil for this outstanding site. I truly look forward to reading about what happens at Taney and pick up pointers on fly-fishing, equipment etc. GREAT JOB Phil!

For the last twenty + years, 10/15 years being located at Lilley's, our group hit town for our annual October fishing trip to Taney. This group is made up of family and friends with newbies joining whenever someone passes on. The oldest now being my father at 83 years. My brother-in-law and myself are the only fly-fishermen of this group, and we are picked on from day one.

Now for the fishing reports you see on the thread. Lincoln who works for Phil placed a simple post on his dad catching all kinds of trout at Taney on marshmallows about one week before we were to arrive. I told the bait fishermen about this interesting post by Lincoln. Guess what happened? These guys caught all the fish they wanted and REALLY enjoyed themselves so much! Why? BECAUSE of a very simple post that supplied all the information they needed. It was great to see how much FUN my father had during the trip, except for the nightly pocker games, and never knowing how many, if any, October trips are ahead of him.

Fishing is not brain surgery, I think you learn more by doing it yourself. All the post in the world about location, flies used, time of day etc. will not tell you about fly placement, tippet size, proper mending of the line for the right drift etc.. I have fished standing next to my fishing buddy using the same of everything and be out fished, with me doing the same to him.

As mentioned before this is why we call it FISHING!!

PS: They are doing a little test to see how well marshmallows work on catfish at Grand Lake.

My $.02....

For a site that's alleged to be full of "drama", I've learned a ton about tactics, flies, areas to fish and avoid, tippets, fly tying techniques, night vs. day fishing, etc. Along the way, I am continually entertained by the comments and wit that accompanies the advice. If the posts were just dry fishing reports, I wouldn't take time most evenings to see what's new!

I'm 4+ hours from the stream, and have only been there twice in 2006. My next trip, likely in 2007, will be substantially more productive thanks to the open and honest information posted by a host of seasoned anglers.

Lilley....how can you do better than that? Sometimes the best forum administrators stand back and let information and collaboration flow....thanks!

 This site doesn't have very much drama, but there are sites that do.

Detailed fishing reports can ruin small streams that can't handle the pressure. What you post here has a very long half life. I ocassionally get emails from fishing reports I made years ago before I learned to keep my mouth shut.

Taney can take it, but small waters can not. If you like that little creek where you catch 15 inch smallies, you'd be much better off showing it to a friend or two in person.

I really am more interested in techniques and general information.

This is a heavy topic. Comic relief may be what this thread needs. But that’s not my purpose. I am one of the newest members of the site. I came here by accident looking for ways not to get skunked the next time I go to Taney. BTW, I too visit other forums on a lot of subjects, and they all are “all over the place.” That’s why they are called forums.

What I found on this site did start with comic relief. Dah. I think I generated quite a bit. I got to have fun and laugh about what was the worst 3 hours of my life. And a lot of the guys on this site and in the fly shops helped me do just that.

But what I got back was huge. I was looking for the most basic information a newbie could seek. I was looking for maps, for help with flies and knots. I needed to know the names of all of the various spots on the river. I had so little information that I did not know the questions to ask.

So I searched this site. I printed a couple hundred pages of information to read. I am not ready for fishing reports. I needed to know what a “scud” was. I needed to know what presentation to use with a fly that I could not recognize because the guide I hired always did that for me. I needed to get past having someone do and get someone to teach.

This is that “teach a man to fish” site that I was looking for. This is where I can go and read what I need to learn, and then go and get a little entertainment to boot.

So, I love this site. It was one of 33 that I searched thru to find what I was looking for on Sunday night. I stumbled into the forum by accident, lucky me, and found a wealth of knowledge and people that did not mind sharing or ribbing or torturing.

It is usually hard for a newbie to get involved in a site like this. Most of the posts I have read up to now would lead me to think that that is not the case here.

So, Thanks Phil and everyone ese that posts here
