Chief Grey Bear Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I have nothing against people keeping a legal creel of fish but you'd better be starving to keep smallmouth out of small stream like these. ozarkgunner Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Thanks for the advice Cullinby. I am a catch and release guy and have not and will not take fish from any of the waters I fish. No fish in the James?.........hmmmmmm None! Angler At Law
Mitch f Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I don't keep any bass except for a few spots. No smallies or LMB. I don't know of anyone that keeps LMB or SMB that I fish with. I will keep stocker trout from the parks. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Chief Grey Bear Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 And then if I am catching any spotted bass, those are the ones to keep. Why is that?? ozarkgunner Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 People like to eat spots because they grow to 12 inches quickly and reproduce very well. Quicker growing than the other bass and taste better. I haven't ate one in a long long time but smallies taste like dirt. Angler At Law
Mitch f Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Actually Cheif I don't want to start a ruckus but if a few unemployed people decided to take a legal creel limit of smallies everyday for a month it could destroy a good creek in no time. So I don't mind taking a few fish now and then but you got to wonder what would happen if the "gotta take something home cuz I love fried fish" mentality didnt exist. There might be a lot more fish to catch and release. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor

Quicker growing than the other bass and taste better. I haven't ate one in a long long time but smallies taste like dirt. They don't any quicker than a brownie. Both take about 4 years to reach 12 inches. From that point on, spots actually grow at a slower rate than smallmouth. And brownies don't taste like dirt, they are as sweet as lobster. You're doing something wrong. You ever try Smallmouth Gumbo! Holy Moses! That is awesome!
