Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted February 14, 2013 Root Admin Posted February 14, 2013 Got on the water and up to our spot by 7:30 this morning. Crappie on the first cast. Had 3 limits by 10 am. Same technique - slow retrieve right on the bottom in 7-9 feet. I forgot (or lost) my crappie measure tool so everything that went in the livewells were at least 11 inches. We were checked yesterday at the ramp and was expecting to see him again today (did not). We threw back quite a few "keepers" along with some short of 10 inches. Yesterday's crappie I cleaned - 11 out of 30 were female. I have not cleaned today's catch yet. My temp gauge was incorrect yesterday. My new gauge this morning said the water temp was 43. Pics to follow.
Quillback Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Whew, for a second there I thought this had something to do with an outhouse... That's pretty good, 3 limits of crappie, congrats!
Josh Holt Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 that colors your useing are they smoke with purple flake and smoke with red flake
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted February 14, 2013 Author Root Admin Posted February 14, 2013 It's the old electric purple. Purple minnow with blue flake. I bought 10k from Mark at Cricket Creek when we thought the original swimming minnow people were going out of business.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted February 15, 2013 Author Root Admin Posted February 15, 2013 I think I've cleaned enough crappie for a while.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted February 15, 2013 Author Root Admin Posted February 15, 2013 13 females out of 45 keepers today.
Jerry Rapp Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 dang, by the title of the post Lilley, I thought this was going to be about a stinky outhouse or something!
Tightline Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Thanks for the pics,it keeps my fever high through the week when I can't go.Nice slabs.
Fishrman Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Question. You say flats and I know what you mean there but are they just on bare flats or are they on brush piles or other cover on the flats? Never caugh them like that before and over the last 5 years I have caught a lot of them up Kings just never like what you are talking about. Just curious. Also, is this something that may only happen in the James?
Josh Holt Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I am just catching them on mud flats the mud warms up faster allowing the fish to hang their no cover that i have been fishing around I know that this also will work for black crappie around the long creek area cause ive caught them the same way down their. Most people didn't know I was catching fish this shollow for almost a month. For a month i was the only boat fishing where I was at except a couple friends.
