Great point on the reels. If you remember you told me that before when I was having problems. I cleaned them up and put a very small ammount of Steez oil on the gears, I mean miniscule. The Exceller is still givin me fits.

Smallest for me is the 1500 series and you are right about the size. All my bass stuff is at least 2500, but it is all shimano.

Good Info.

Might just be a lemon too. Happens from time to time. If you have any Excellers in the 3000 being held captive I would definitely post bail for them. Let me know. Picked up six of the 3000HA's last year when they were on clearance, but hate to tap into my put away stash.

Reading reviews on a bunch of Daiwa products at TW and elsewhere (especially the complaints, and even some higher end gear) you see similar issues come up. Just don't think they are using a quality selection of lubes in their product, or it is just aimed at warm weather fishing. Re-lube mine with the yellow Ardent grease on the gears, but have also used trailer hitch lube and CLP when in a pinch. That is after a thorough scrub and soak. Have also run them pretty dry at times, which seems better than over lubed. Will say they run better with grease on the gears than with oil or CLP.

I fish a lot of small stuff and grubs/shakey/rigs with them, but tend to keep the drag set on the light side. Don't want it to slip on the set, but not far from that point. Am pretty obsessive about backing the drags completely off at the end of the day, and when storing, to prevent compressing the washers. All reels, not just the Daiwas.

Anyone using the newer Daiwa casting reel with the "T" line guide? Think it is the Ballistic?

Daiwa T3 & Ballistic both have the Twing System. I looked at them this winter, but was a little worried about the design. When you engage the thumb bar the "hood" in front pops up to alow the line to move up into the T. When you engage the handle, it pops back down to put the line in the bottom of the T and guide it onto the spool. Maybe it's the old timer in me, but I feel the fewer moving parts the better. Maybe it casts like a dream, but I wasn't willing to spend the money to find out.

I've got a couple Zillions and I love them. Not a Plug - but I found 'em on Fishermans Warehouse for $269. Pretty tough price to beat when everyone else is selling them for $320. Talked to a Daiwa Rep that said a new model Zillion should be coming mid year, so I'd guess they're moving old stock??

I added a few Lexa 100/300's to the collection this winter. I'm interested to see how they perform. Daiwa has always made high quality reels, and with the Lexa they've hit a new demo - the 100 series is $139 and the 200 series is $199.

I've gone from Quantums to Abu and now to Daiwa. For the money they're tough to beat. My tournament partner started fishing Daiwa JDM Reels late last year - they're even better but they cost an arm and a leg more.

I have 10 Excellers in the 1500 series, and they all do the same thing. If it is under 40 degrees, they all fish the same. No Drag, No Bale and No anti Reverse.

All of these I use for trout. Gets to 40 degree and they work perfect.

I used to have a Beretta shotgun that was similar. If you put one drop of oil on it you were in trouble. Shoot it dry and no problems.

The T deal is interesting. Did not realize it had built in "play". Seems like it would be a pending malfunction.

Have fond and not so fond memories of an old 521XLT Abu that had a "moving" levelwind. Caused a lot of one sided line build up.
