Guest Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 I saw Jason Christie's old rogue in chrome/blue/orange, it was ghetto fabulous I kinda flashed back to the early days of my life thats when I first learned to fish a rogue back in the 80's before they had suspending baits Back then, we took really small split shot and pinched them on the line about 18-24" up from the floating rogue. This advice was given to us by another fisherman in the tackle shop, before a trip to Lake DeGray. I thought it was stupid to weight down the bait but I tried when all else failed. The bass were hanging out around small islands near the dam in 80-90' FOW. We salvaged a rough tournament by catching a limit of line burners right before weigh in. Those guys earned their keep in sub freezing temps and slow moving baits. I would like to see a few of those 30lb bags that Grand churns out consistently. This years Classic was awesome, because I learned my rogues are undersized and so is my rod and reel setup to fish them properly.
Gavin Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Rogues and Husky Jerks still work....Better than the high dollar candy sometimes...High dollar candy works too...Best to have an assortment.

I would agree the one I saw him using didn't look to be a custom paint job and I have a couple like that I bought at a Walmart clearance sale a few years back that need to be thrown sometime. I saw the new one( on the web site)with the big lip that dives to 10 feet but my personal experience with deep diving pointers and husky jerks is I don't catch fish off those deep diving jerk baits. I have had much better luck adding a little weight and getting the 4ft divers to sink to 10-20 feet when I need to get down there. Thanks for the memories, I might have talked to the same guy at the same bait shop back in the 80s because I remember fishing them the same way, long before suspend dots. lol
Sore Thumbs Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 I watched the War Room during the tournament and they were saying that Grand is one of the few lakes in the country where a Rogue is supreme. By the way top 5 in the Bassmaster where using something besides a Rogue. It was Megabass, lucky craft, spro, jackall and Rapala. I think they all were working. Crazy.

Not too strange when you consider bass have an IQ of 4 and don't read bass fishing magazines. IMO catching fish has not gotten harder in 20 years just choosing lures has.

I stick to 3-4 patterns this time of year depending on weather. blue bird + wind = jerkbait bait cloudy= crankbait & jig bite I try to keep it simple and grind through lots of creek channel swings.
