buckcreekmike Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 The newest in fisherman has an article about using rattle trap style cranks in cold water (low 40's), for smallies. Does anyone use these at TR, or are you better off with the suspending stick baits? I think the article was more geared towards up North where those guys are from, but I wondered if any of you have had success with them. I'll be there next week and really have cabin fever. I fished two weekends ago at LOZ and caught two bass with one 16" keeper on a pro blue lucky strike Rick Clunn. The water was 42 degrees and it was windy.
Iclass Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 I've had better luck with them on grass lakes in the cold water. Not had much success with them on TR.
dtrs5kprs Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 Think they are too much for the cold clear water. Up north...MN, WI... might be a different deal.
Sprint21fter Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 You can catch some on some deep bluff walls and let if flutter down to a deep ledge. Only done it twice of all the years I have fished here. Fish it like a spoon, make a pitch cast right up to the bluffwall and let it free fall and pop it a few times and do it again. 3/4oz or 1oz.
exiledguide Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 I've always used them in clear lakes like Ouchita in and around grass beds or brush piles.
Members creekin bassnerd Posted March 29, 2013 Members Posted March 29, 2013 Saw this nice smallie caught on a rattle trap in a river above a lake about 3 weeks ago.
Sprint21fter Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 That smallie looks a meanmouth. Nice fish either way.
Members creekin bassnerd Posted March 29, 2013 Members Posted March 29, 2013 really? thats interesting. I guess I don't know the difference between the 2.
Sprint21fter Posted March 29, 2013 Posted March 29, 2013 If look at the sides of the fish you see a distinct line of spots along its side just like a spotted bass but is blended with the darkness of the smallmouth genes.
