MSUFisherBear Posted April 9, 2013 Author Posted April 9, 2013 Yes, I would have to agree on that point. Still, as healthy as the shad population in that lake is, you would think that there would be a fairly positive correlation to the amount of crappie. I do know that it has certainly done nothing but help the bass and catfish populations in that lake. WakenLake Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 i keep hearing stories about how theres IS tons of crappie there, yet ive never got into them like that. Ive caught and 11 1/2 out of there and that made me believe that they are there, but ive not seen the numbers. id like to fish the river channel up by the steel walking bridge but no boat. www.jordanvalleyautorepair.com
MSUFisherBear Posted April 12, 2013 Author Posted April 12, 2013 I have caught exactly ONE out of that lake. Totally unexpected. I had the canoe out on that day with the girlfriend. I caught him out of one of the many brush piles WAY up in the river on a Crickhopper that I was using like a top water plug that day :-S. Ironically, the only other fish that I caught that day were bass and some whopper red-ears. There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind. ~Washington Irving
luckycraft Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 I too have caught some crappie mainly by mistake. I usually catch them the the river channel part of the main lake while throwing spinner baits for Bass. Thing about crappie when you catch one usually there are more. But no numbers on my end either.
aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 last year spring my buddy and i caught 12 nice ones. he caught one that measured 17 and most of them we caught were over twelve...biggest bag of crappie ive ever caught, but nothing since
MSUFisherBear Posted April 12, 2013 Author Posted April 12, 2013 MSU, were you out the other day fishing with a buddy off Kayaks? Lucky, I don't think I was really clear. I was in a Kayak, but I am a loner. :-P. No fishin buddy on that day. There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind. ~Washington Irving

Late in the winter I have caught some REALLY nice crappie out of that lake. I'll try to post a pic sometime. But, I can't find them outside of winter. The lakes can be REALLY frustrating when it comes to crappie around here, so I have really almost completely given up the chase. If I want to eat, I'll catch cats and a bunch of big bluegill. Just as good to eat, and they seem to be plenty abundant. There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind. ~Washington Irving

I was just fishing the otherday and came across two guys in a kayaks doing fairly well. Just thought I would say hello to ya if that was you, but guess not. I usually am in a 14' jon
Bassmaster21 Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 I have tried for crappie out there so many times and caught ONE. The bass however are a different story. I can go out in a morning and catch the crap out of them. There are lots of good sized ones in that lake too. I agree with what MSUfisherbear said about the lures. I see so many boats out there and very rarely do I see anybody catch much of anything. By the way some of them act they look like they know what they are doing but never seem to catch many. I do believe that the fish overtime learn to stay away from certain lures... Example: A few years ago I threw a buzzbait religiously out there. Couldnt keep them off of it no matter the weather or time of day and I never saw anybody else using them. Now every other angler is using one and I haven't caught as many on them. In general though like MSUfisherBear said, just keep trying new things. Very rarely do I leave the lake on a morning and have caught less than 10 bass. Its all about the amount of casts to quality spots you make out there not necessarily the lure choice.
jbtiwns30 Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 I only fished this lake for one year and i do have to say that there are tons of bass in here and crappie as well. The crappie population doesnt compare to fellows though. But when you catch crappies out this lake they normally are bigger then what you catch at fellows. I can catch my limit at fellows but they range from 10 to 13inches. At springfield lake i can catch my limit and the size range has been 12 to 19 1/2 inches. The secret at this lake is the crappies love to be in current but not to strong and the greener the water the better the fishing is for them.
