Members Brennan Posted May 28, 2013 Members Posted May 28, 2013 I love to fish a 5/8 and 3/4 FB jig. I'm looking for a dedicated FB jig rod and think I want the Mike McClelland Cara FB jig rod. My question is....is the split grip micro guide version the same action as the original version. I saw a video Mike had online and he said it was a heavier action than the original. I will often drop down to 12lb fluorocarbon in the clear water and don't want a heavier action. Any input you may have on this or other rods specifically for dragging FB jigs on a long cast would be appreciated. Thanks.
dtrs5kprs Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 I use a 7' Hvy St Croix Legend Extreme (old style), 3/4oz FB is the only thing on it. Usually 15# seaguar, but 12# has not been a problem. Not super sure you need to drop down to 12# with the big jig, even from Kimberling to the dam.
rps Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 Ton of info here: The Falcon Cara line represents the highest quality for the price you will find. To find a better rod, you have to make your own or begin buying what many call "enthusiast" level rods. I looked at the models and the MMC-5f-172 sounds more like what you want than the MMC-6-174. Take a reel spooled with 12# line and a 5/8 jig with the hook cut off.to the store (be sure you check in to avoid problems trying to leave) and get permission to rig the rod and toss the jig. In Rogers at HLS they will accommodate you happily. I bet both the Bass Pro and Cabelas will say ok. I can't speak for Sportsmans as I have never been there.
Guest Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 I use the cara head turner for football jigs. 15-20lb floro, no less It's great rod
ozarkgunner Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 I love my caras. Three and counting. Loomis days are long gone. I like the medium heavy jig rod with micro guides. I would always go with the micro guides unless you winter fish a lot. Angler At Law
Champ188 Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 I use the Duckett Micro Magic 7-3 medium heavy and love it for half and 5/8 football jig. Very light and super sensitive, plus handles a good fish very well.
jmes Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 I recently got a 7' 6" Lews Medium Heavy I have been using this for the past 2 weeks and love it
Jason Essary Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 I have 2 of those cara's. Absolutely love them. One is a new one as you state with the split grip and micro guides as I broke the old one late last year and had it replaced over the winter. It is slightly stiffer, slightly. If it worries you then I would try a lighter one, but I would move up to 15lb seaguar and turn the drag down if it worries you. Have broke a few off close to the boat, but I can stick the ones that hit on the end of the long cast much deeper than before. Bill Babler Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 You simply cannot do better than the Falcon Cara and Reaction series of rods. Along with the head turner, you may also want to view the Reaction Swim Jig Rod. It is a bit longer and I believe it handles that size bait. The Cara Amasted is also a great rod for what you are looking for. You are more than welcome to come to my house and put your hands on any of the fine bass fishing casting rods that Falcon makes. I usually have most models on hand for anyone to see. Tackle Warehouse would have been the deal up to yesterday with the big discount, but they are worth the full price everyday. Most of mine are equipped with Lews Tournament Pro's, or Diawa Steez so you will for sure have your hands on a good one. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
Champ188 Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Hey Bill, those Falcons are a bit dull for Denny and I ... we only use bright white or yellow rods. But we will probably stop by and pilfer thru your stuff anyway. Probably raid the fridge while we're at it. We are usually hungry.
