This morning I tied on a Buckeye wake bait. It makes a great wake and looks beautiful in the water. Did I catch a fish with it? No. I threw it for an hour on pole timber bluff ends and way out on pea gravel points. Frustrated , I began to alternate casts between a Ned rig and a jika rig. I fished from 2 foot to 30 foot. Did I catch a fish? No. I fished the plastic for more than an hour. By now it was 9:00 AM and I had not put anything - even a bluegill - in the boat.

I threw my hand made custom rods with Revo MGX's and Lew's Tournament Pro's down in the bottom of my boat in disgust. (Actually, I was pretty careful. Those rigs are expensive!)

I began to hunt walleye where I found fish two days ago, gravel inside bends at 10 feet. Guess where they weren't? Around 10:30 I began to find fish. I finished with 6 walleye. One was maybe a foot, four were between 16 and 17.5 inches. I had one 21.5 inch fish to clean. All on worm harnesses. Today's depth was 15 to 17 feet and the magic was bumps on flats.

Yes, I was fishing the wrong lake at the wrong places. Except I loved every minute.

I agree with you on loving every minute, even on a tough day the Rock is a great place to fish.

RPS, You have the right lake, but wrong bait. You have to take Bablers advice and throw that Buckeye away. The only time I can catch fish on that bait is dirty water. Try a spook jr. or giant dog x and the topwater fish will play.

Kind of make your heart feel good doesn't it. You know it is like anything. First thing in the Mornings, I am just lookin for any kind of a bite to get the day going. It seems like you really never catch up if you start slow.

On that Buckeye, I know it looks great and fish should love it, but I have thrown and thrown it on Table Rock with really just very poor results. That tail sweep is just to wide I'm thinking could be the problem. Had two different clients tell me they could make it work. Both lasted about an hour on it while seeing their partners catch them on a fin or a spook. Even being the first bait thru a section does not mean success for it. The guy in the back of the boat can throw right where you did and pull on sometimes.

My biggest disappointment with it was one day we were throwing to schooling fish with it and two fins. These were not white bass, they were Blacks. I finely had to change it out as it would not catch the chasers and every other bait in the box was hooked up immediately. I have completely taken the ones I have out of the everyday box to make room for baits that want to catch fish.

I still however think it will catch them, just not in the same category as the fin-spook-Sammy or Bug.

Bought a Jitterbug this morning. Replaced the trebles with what I had in that size - Gama EWG. Tomorrow morning I will use it. I will throw my beloved Top Dollar with the other rod. We will see which calls the fish.

Good Plan. RPS you have reached the point when catching them is not as important as what you catch them on. Like every fly fisherman I know that has experience, if he or she catches several on a fly, it is now time to change. You know that works, what else might. I applaud you sir.
