Quillback
QB, you might want to just try a weightless white fluke on those shallow fish early. Never mind, you have a sure fire method already, LOL! I appreciate your posts. Good idea, doesn't hurt to throw something else for the fish that don't eat the big worm. I'm also thinking of throwing a fluke around docks and brush on a Jika rig.
dtrs5kprs
Jason, I am also an Owner fan as they are just the best hooks you can buy IMO. But its not like you are downgrading all the bad by switching to Gammy's. For Jika's Rigs I love the Owners but the Gammy Super Line hooks have a bigger eye thus you don't have the split ring rubbing on the inside of the eye and getting all caught up. Should solve the problem although I wish Owner had a bigger eyelet on their 4/0 and 5/0 EWG hooks. Superline hooks are the ticket. The BPS version is not bad either, and not as painful when the point inevitably rolls.
flyman
Superline hooks are the ticket. The BPS version is not bad either, and not as painful when the point inevitably rolls. He's right. I used 2/0 - 4/0 Gamakatsu Superline EWG worm hook and #3 split ring with 1/4 oz bass casting bell weight. Works perfect. Have not tried the BPS hooks. There is a great video on youtube explaining how to make them with these components. It also demonstrates the underwater action compared to texas rig in an aquarium. Pretty interesting. There is also a good article about Stacy King using them at Table Rock. His recipes for making them are slightly more complicated but there are some good tips for making and fishing them. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=Gd9LcxAHMPY&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DGd9LcxAHMPY http://www.in-fisherman.com/2012/10/08/stacey-the-jika-rig-king/
Jason Essary
Boys, im all for cheap as we can fish, but I do not thow the bs brand hooks anymore. 2 years ago they were on sale so I stocked up on 5/0's. I lost 4 "big" fish that really hurt our bags because of the points rolling. Im talking fresh hooks, brand new out of the pack. Set the hook, had them for seconds and gone. Each time the point was rolled real bad. Tested one, I can roll one pushing hard against my thumb nail. They are extremely sharp, but they are way way to long tapered pointed without having the temper to keep them straight. Believe I hit the "crushers" on those fish and thats what done it. That being said, I filed each point down to what I wanted and used them pre fishing. Now I dont have one to my name. A couple really hurt us in the standings I believe and I am saying this because I dont want anyone to loss a "fish of a lifetime" because they wanted to save 15 cents per hook. Ok ranting over, I will try some of the tips for the jika and see what happens. Sore Thumbs
Jason I had same problem making my own. You can 't find those long weights they use either. I just bite the bullet and pay for the pre made ones. I have some of the tungsten ones and can't tell a bit of difference in feel. The lead ones work just as good. merc1997 Bo
try using a wire duo lock snap. bo Tried making the jika at home. Cant get it right, if I use split rings that have enough room to let them move, they rub on the inside of the hook eye enough that they dont freely move. Dropped down in size of the split ring and the split ring is so tight it doesnt move freely again. Im getting frustrated. Maybe have to use something other than my owner hooks, but I love love the cutting edge.
Members usmcgrunt
Superline hooks are the ticket. The BPS version is not bad either, and not as painful when the point inevitably rolls. Gamakatsu actually makes a lot of hooks for BPS so those are usually what I buy. Of course my employee discount doesn't hurt either lol
