Al Agnew Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Funny story from my town... We had a "town idiot". He was a man in his 40s when I was a teenager, very much mentally challenged ("retarded" is another word that's a no-no these days), but fairly normal in appearance, and though his vocabulary was simple, he could speak fairly normally as well. He was homeless, but various people around town would put him up for months at a time, taking turns taking care of him. As you will see, they also instilled their prejudices in him. I'm not sure what his real name was; everybody called him "Tooter". Tooter was absolutely fascinated by uniforms. Didn't matter what kind of uniform, he loved them all, and the people around town were always giving him various uniforms. On almost any given day you could find him parading along Main Street in a uniform. On this particular day, it just so happened that Tooter was in front of the insurance office in a police uniform, complete with (non-working) handgun, when a well-dressed black man pulled up to the curb and got out of his car. As he stepped up onto the sidewalk, Tooter approached him. "What you doin' in this here town, n-----?" Tooter asked him in a gruff voice. The poor guy, taken aback, said, "Well, um, I have business in the insurance office." "No you don't. We don't allow n-----s in this town. You just turn around and git out." Now remember, this was in the late 1960s at the height of the Civil Rights movement. The guy probably couldn't believe it, but what was he to do? Here was a policeman telling him in no uncertain terms to leave. He turned without another word and headed back to his car. Up until about then, the few townspeople who happened to be watching the show were cracking up. But they suddenly realized that the guy was taking this seriously, and they'd better stop him or they'd have the NAACP down on the town with a vengeance. They rushed out to do so, but he probably thought it was more people coming to run him off. By that time he was in the car with the door shut, and he backed out and burned rubber taking off. For many months after that, all the town business and political leaders were sweating bullets, waiting for the punishment to descend. As it happened, the insurance agency owner didn't think much of the town's overt racism anyway, and he knew who the guy was and called him and told him about Tooter. But he didn't tell anybody else that he'd smoothed things over; he figured keeping themselves up at nights worrying was no more than they deserved.
Guest Brian B. Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 The mentality of perpetual victim-hood will ensure that I will continue to read more stories like this... All the while rappers and the majority of the black community use the term with reckless abandon. I never owned a slave- PERIOD... I OWE YOU NOTHING.. Stop insisting you are in some way a victim at every turn, and insisting every one has wronged you- than, and only them will you be treated the way you want to be treated.
Feathers and Fins Posted June 30, 2013 Author Posted June 30, 2013 I saw something on FB this morning that really says double standard... Go to Wal-Mart - k-mart, target all these stores who have dropped their contracts with her and look in their Video and Music departments... Seems its ok for them to sell products with seriously racial songs in them. How about removing them and banning any product with the singer/actor in them. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Guest Brian B. Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Because- don't you know, it is impossible for blacks to say anything that is racist- as they can never be racist... They have the victim status- not us. So black musicians can say any and everything and it is "expressing themselves"... Why would they get any flack for peddling their filth- it is just "black expression"- "yo"
Feathers and Fins Posted June 30, 2013 Author Posted June 30, 2013 Brian, I don't think you got it... Im talking everyone who has said it in any movie or music video. If it is so offensive as all this than ANYONE who says it or puts it in a movie should be banned. White, Black, Yellow, Brown or little green Martian. Racism is discrimination and so it what they are doing to her. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Guest Brian B. Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 I am "not getting it"... The double standard and lying about what we say in our individual lives is the offensive part. You can't ban what people are- ban the sale of the music- OK.. Then what? Has anyone's heart changed?- NO... Everybody says ni__er.. So what... "I don't say it!!" You say? (I call BS).... But even if you do not.. Do you bite your tongue in an effort NOT to say it? It is a word... so freaking what!!! I was more offended at her LYING that she used it one time... So you say "n-er"... So... What!! Who cares? Are we censoring thoughts next?
Feathers and Fins Posted June 30, 2013 Author Posted June 30, 2013 Her lying is one thing if that is why they break ties so be it! But if it is purely motivated by the word or her upbringing an past ways of speech then remove everything off the shelves that "may be offensive based off that" Gone with "Gone with the Wind" Gone with "Tom Sawyer" Gone with "The Bible". Do not say you have (ZERO TOLERENCE) and then leave so many other offensive things on the shelves. But then you would have a backlash of historic proportions protesting in front of those stores. Writing this I just have to wonder ( Has any of the Duck Commanders said it? ) one of the most popular people on tv and merchandizing would they drop them as fast? https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Guest Brian B. Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 I think the DC family may be more integrated than you may realise And I mean that in a positive way. I enjoy the show somewhat- but.... Getting a little over- exposed- the 15 minutes is almost up... Time to bank that money..
Wayne SW/MO Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Deen had a new cookbook coming out, one with healthier recipes. Supposed to be published this fall, it is the #1 seller on Amazon (pre-order). Well the publisher, Ballantine Books, has announced they will not publish the book. Ballantine Books is now on my jackass list. Now we've reached a point where, figuratively speaking, we're burning books? That's really over the top. Personally the whole thing is out of control. If they can use the word, and words for Caucasians, then any use has to be put in context. If she did indeed use it to describe someone who robbed her then it was certainly a good use of the term. If she used it when she was young, well surprise, she lived in Savannah! This whole outrage over virtually nothing coupled with all the showings of the "black" guy beating the he$$ out of the young mother doesn't really do a lot to solve any racial issues. There is also the fact that it has not always been a derogatory name. No doubt it could be said to be, but it was also a slide from negro when coupled with a southern drawl. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
ozark trout fisher Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Frankly, I'm pretty shocked to see people defending this. I have African American friends and I know how hurtful that word is to them. I don't care if it's part of southern culture. We all know that there have been aspects of southern culture in the past, as it relates to race, that are nothing short of repulsive. This is one of them. I'm not saying that any person who has ever used the word is automatically a bad person. Maybe it was acceptable a few decades ago. But it's not now, and if I EVER hear anyone saying it they will get an earful from me.
