New River in West Virginia has finally moved to the top of my short list of rivers to see and fish. I’m pretty green on the area and have just started planning an August trip. I have a couple of guide books and a Map coming in the mail, tips on accommodations, a deep respect for white water but really don’t know much about what sections of the river offer what fishing opportunities. The plan is pretty modest, a guide trip or two, researching the river for future do it myself trips and some time spent exploring local small streams. I appreciate any comments or recommendations.

Thanks,

Mike

Great, I'll give him a call. I forgot to mention, this trip is all about a chance to see some of the pig Smallmouth that I've been hearing about.

Im from there. I live in Oklahoma now but took a smallmouth float trip a few years back. That is a great smallmouth river but we hit it on an off day. You will only be a few hours away but you might consider hitting the Elk for trout while you are there.

Thanks JC, I figured on taking a couple of light trout rods so I’ll look into the Elk. My plans were coming together; I have accommodations picked out, maps, books, some serious enthusiasm but sure enough the river just crested about 10X the ideal flow, not sure how this will play out.

They have had a lot of rain recently. If your still going in August the New will probably be fine. Elk, not sure on that. It might be low

I'd strongly recommend a guide at least for one day. I fished one day with and one day without a guide. I learned a lot that I brought home and applied to our waters. I caught a bunch on nice smallies and one over 20 inches with the guide and a 21 1/4 the next day w/o the guide.

The New can be dangerous. Lots of ppl have drowned on it, but no one has ever drowned with a guide on the New.

I took a white water rafting trip when the water was at the perfect level for optimum rapids. A guide is a must for people who have never been there. Seeing that first rapid when I was on my smallmouth trip was scary. We went left of it and I videoed it. Im amazed we went threw that on the white water trip.
