Blazerman Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 There are not near as many boulders as there used to be but there are still plenty and my Blazer has a big dent to prove it as well. The river is a lot wider now there too. The big cove that is on the right once you get past the cave is where i caught my biggest river largemouth. it was 5.5 pds and 24".
cnr Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 405z06, you should do yourself a favor and get a quality mask and some flippers and free dive some of these root wads......it will absolutely blow you away......on the Black River it's simply amazing how many big fish are up under the wood. Smallie is spot on about this. I have done the snorkeling thing on the Black and was stunned at the quantity and quality of the fish under the logs. Even a single log holds many fish. I have seen them lined up nose to tail along the length of a large diameter log just sitting by itself. Really cool. I highly recommend any smallmouth angler to do some snorkeling on a clear river like the black. It's very enlightening.

Chief Grey Bear Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 Missouri probably has about 2 million more people since 1960, and the same amount of streams! Not to mention those in surrounding states that cross the border to fish. And we want to create a World Class fishery to attract more people. I like the idea of it but I won't like the cost of it. Hog Wally Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 In forty years old. When I was not quite a teen my mom would drop us off at sand ford and we did a 5 day float back to shady. We only brought flour and grease. We stayed in the cave right across from that cove. We ate pigeons that lived in the cave and everything else from frogs to squirrels and whatever fish we caught. That stretch of river has so many fond memories for me probably was the only time my poor mom got a break from us 4 boys It looks identical today. Smallmouth were my passion back then I just don't get all amped up over them anymore. Unless they over 18".
Hog Wally Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 Oh yeah. Forgot to tell ya my biggest largemouth also came from the cove or slough as we call em. Go to back end walk across ten yards of brush. Welcome to largemouth and crappie heaven. Ten foot deep crystal clear log infested slough. Check it out. I if you like it I can pm you several more just like it. This walleye fishing has me not caring about bass so I could hook you up. Another one down by pickles ford that would make any bass guy drool
Brian Jones Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 That is the exact boulder riffle where my dad and I tore the bottom out of my boat last year Got more dents in the bottom of our boat from that stretch of water than all the other water I've ran. Seems like every time I get used to running it, a rock gets pushed into the "channel" and I find it...............
