Members WOZ Posted August 3, 2013 Members Posted August 3, 2013 Being new to this area, and never fly fishing for bass, I need to stock up on bass flies. If you wouldn't mind giving me some suggestions so I can stock up, it would be appreciated! Woz And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth. Greasy B Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 Sneaky Pete, Size 2. They come in three colors: Black, Chartreuse, Chartreuse/Red bar. You need all three colors but more often than not Chartreuse/Red bar will out fish the others. RSBreth Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 I like Sneaky Petes and regular poppers (foam or Deer Hair) and Clouser Minnows. I also tye an unnamed little fly that looks like a tiny finesse jig with a rabbit strip trailer - that my bottem dredger.
Wayne SW/MO Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 You need some wooly buggers, brown, tan and black. Something for the top in yeller, crease, Pete, or bombers. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
drew03cmc Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 Wayne about hit it on the head. I catch more bass on buggers than anything else. I caught my biggest largemouth to date on a #6 popper, about three weeks after I grabbed my first fly rod on a whim. Don't forget that bass will hit flies that are intended for gills as well. Andy
marcusearlt Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 I've had good luck on lot's of poppers, especially Bett's brand, cone head zonkers, wooly buggers with and without rubber legs, clousers, and even articulated streamers like the circus peanut. Some more good ones are Todd's wiggle minnows, Dahlberg's divers, and crawdad imitations. "If people don't occasionally walk away from you shaking their heads, you're doing something wrong." Members Tearin Up Topwater Posted August 5, 2013 Members Posted August 5, 2013 Betts are about the best made and most readily available. I like the small and larger(bass) bug they make with the black and yellow bee pattern. They really just don't make popping bugs like they used to. Drew is so right, I recently lost a horse on a small panfish bug. The hook was just too small for that brut. It had to be around 4lbs the way my rod was bent over. It had to be the loudest "kerplunk" sucking sound and that could only mean a huge bucketmouth....I can still hear it haunting me......darn.

Few years back I spent a week fly fishing for smallies on one of the great bass rivers up north. We came equipped with all manner of divers, hair bugs and streamers, the most productive fly by far was a Bluegill bug, white with red dots.
