MOsmallies Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 Ok Wharfrat, are you catching crappier right now? Blazerman... He just posted a report 2 days ago. Sounds like the bite is picking up nicely...
Blazerman Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 Blazerman... He just posted a report 2 days ago. Sounds like the bite is picking up nicely... Thanks did not see it. Sounds like it might be time to give the crappie a try.
WHARFRAT Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 Where I'm at they are relating to the deep cover of docks more so than brush piles. I've always heard match the hatch, so with all the small shad running around, I'm shooting 2" slab busters (pumpkin seed/chartruse) towards the rear and as far underneath as I'm able. Seems to be working better than verticle jigging right now. I would think as the water cools off in the next few weeks, they'll move out on brush piles around the docks, then I can feel the "thump". Last Saturday, caught some decent size fish shooting docks. The strike was really lite, so you have to pay close attention to your line. I always sweeten the jig with a crappie nibble. Sunday started out pretty good, but as soon as the sun hit the lake, the bite went away. I fished for a while afterwords with nothing but a few dinks. Don't know if it was the high pressure after the rains or what, but it was night and day different from Saturday to Sunday. One person I talked to Saturday, said on Friday they went out and was throwing minnows back in the wells of docks using a slipcork and fishing about 5-6' down and caught quite a few. They had one 14"er and almost 2 limits of 10+" fish. Personally, I don't have the patience to fish with minnows, I wish I did though. I don't know if anyone has paid any attention to the avg size of keeper crappie, but this year has been great for LOZ. I know, the past few years, you had to measure most of you fish, because most keepers were 9-9.5". This year, you don't even need a ruler. Now, that being said 13+" fish are still extremely rare. Most of the time, I'll toss those back anyway, but I haven't had to toss but a couple back this year. Since we just bought down there, I'm really looking forward to Nov fishing. So, I'll be looking for some tips when it gets that time of the year. Adios @lozcrappie Â
MOsmallies Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Great info WHARFRAT! and Thank You. November crappie fishing can be awesome. I'm a bass fisherman through and through, but the crappie have saved a trip or two for me. Last November around Thanksgiving was one of those trips. 1/16 roadrunners, ticking the tops of brush piles next to docks. Also deep brush piles out away from the bank. Looking forward to doing it again this year and glad to here the avg size has been a little better.
Blazerman Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Hear ya Wharfrat. i brought a buddy down in April who always fishes Kentucky lake in the spring for crappie, and he was amazed at the size of the crappie we caught. We were there 4 days and got our limit each day and he said the crappie were the equal to Kentucky lake and he might have to skip his trip again next year and just head back to LOZ. Can't wait to get down there for some late fall fishing.
Members akdoc Posted October 3, 2013 Members Posted October 3, 2013 So who is fishing big bass bash this weekend? I'll be down tomorrow at some point. I haven't been down since Labor day so hopefully I can find some fish!!
97procraft Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 I will be there too. I don't need to find some fish, I only need to find one.
MOsmallies Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 97procraft... That's the exact mindset you need to have. I fished it last year and I had a tough time convincing myself of that when we weren't even catching dinks. I won't be fishing it this year, but it looks like you're gonna get hit with the same kind of cold front we got hit with last year. 20 degree drop in the high from Friday to Saturday. Cloudy and rainy Saturday and then even colder with bluebird skies on Sunday. Just keep chunking though! That big one can hit at any time. Saturday could be an awesome buzzbait or swimbait day with the nasty conditions. Sunday you'll probably just need to stick to flipping the shady parts of docks or skipping a jig way up under there. I feel like I tried to many baits last year instead of focusing on the ones I know will catch big fish if you put it in front of them. If I was fishing this year, I think I'd strictly throw a Buzzbait, Swimbait (Bull Shad or Hollow Belly), or Jig. Good luck to all the OAF guys fishing the BBB and let us know how you do. Would love to see an OAF guy win this thing! I think I may need to fish the Spring one in 2014. I feel much more confident in my ability to catch a nice one in the Spring. Paul MOsmallies
97procraft Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 I through a swimbait most of the day saturday with no success. My wife was fishing with me and throwing a spinnerbait all day. She ended up catching several keeper fish, but none that would even get close this weekend. Sunday I started off using a buzz bait and landed only one fish on it, but it was 3.79 and good enough for the last spot in the 7-9 time slot. Paid $165. The average weight was a lot higher than I expected. Usually there is 3-4 time slots in the fall that have a high 3lb fish getting a check, this year it was only one.
MOsmallies Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Congrats on the check! Was that buzzbait fish shallow or suspended under a dock?
