I then lose it on the first cast. :(

I do like the method of attaching the rattle. But the rest is too tedious for me. I need to make something quick and easy that I won't be heartbroken over hanging on the bottom or 30 feet up in a tree.

I think you could almost tie a woolly on the after the rattle and yarn for the tail (over the hook eye).  That would simplify it quite a bit.

Here is a thought... could you add the rattle (I think it would float) to the front of a gurgler?

I mean you can kind of add the rattle to anything if you really want.
If you throw it in the front of a gurgler and for the front lip back over and tie down you still face a couple problems.

1. The rattle will sit at or above water level.
2. it may work out for the better but the added weight in the front of that fly will pull the front down.
3. It will either stick out the sides of the front unless you tie with a real wide strip of foam, which is fine, except it will envelope every thing you tied on as the body on the shank.

You could tie it on length ways on the body and maybe get some sound out of it. Other than that I'll just keep my rattle use to big streamers and a few craw patterns in the body, if I use them at all.

You know after many years of trying to figure out how the best way to incorporate a rattle into a fly I finally figured it out. Just leave the thing off. I really don't think it adds anything to it.

Thanks Ronnie,

Some trial and error and trying to follow this tutorial.   http://www.themidwest-drift.com/stouffers-shuttlecock

Between this and I have a couple of Jim's for comparison. An old one he made with craft fur and then a newer on with buck tail. I am not thinking the one in the midwest drift and the one of Jim's is exactly the same? I am not going to do a dissection of Jim's to see and mess it up. I had to do my own dubbing brush. I have a chartreuse one in the vice now and if I don't mess it up I will post it :)

I've been tying a few of those too Billett. I've been doing dubbing brushes of craft fur But I think the EP brushes mentioned would make a cleaner/ more uniform head.

They are a sweet fly, I just can't get them the same as Jim's. And that's ok with me.

Yes Lancer I think the dubbing brushes would be much better but using what I have right now. I may purchase some next trip to the shop. I think when we try to replicate any pattern it is hard to get things exactly the same. unless you are the inventor it will never be exact. Tweaking puts a little of us in the tying process.

Some good news my chartreuse one is coming along nicely. Now if I can get those eyes on straight :).

Are you doing the t-shirt paint, then extra glue to keep the eyes on or just setting the eyes into the t-shirt paint?

Posted

Yep tulip fabric paint, when that is dry superglue eyes on then clear cure goo to set them better. What process are you using and how is it working out? Thought about trying to just set eyes into the fabric paint but don't want to mess up the hard work getting the fluffy head.. Easy to mess up.
