Fish24/7 Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 Has anyone been throwing the umbrella rigs lately? I think now would be a good time to use one to catch these schooling fish I'm hearing about.
Members NebSchmidty Posted October 8, 2013 Members Posted October 8, 2013 I was also wondering the same. Is is something specific to the way the shad school (and therefore the bass chase) in the winter that makes it so popular during winter and early early spring season? Coming down the middle of next week and didnt know if i should bother packing my swimbait/rig setup. Heaven knows I already have enough combos to pack the way it is.
Members Teddy Posted October 8, 2013 Members Posted October 8, 2013 Just finished four days on the lake. The best bait was watermellon jig and pig. We just nailed them. Caught 24 or so each day. Never caught any bigger than 3.5#'s. But a lot of fun.
Sprint21fter Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 X's 2 on the jig and pig. Hammered them Saturday with the front coming in with 30 plus keepers with several over 3.5 lbs. Mixed bag of largemouth, kentuckies, and Smallies.
Champ188 Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Dang Sprint, you shoulda fished the Winter Series derby Saturday. You'd have been in the money for sure and those boys are pretty much the best on the lake ... the Fann brothers not withstanding.

It seems to be really popular during cool weather like you said. I don't believe the shad school any diferently than they do the rest of the year really. There are always shad deep, shallow, and in between. I do know the depth you fish it in changes a lot based on numerous variables. We caught fish during the spawn with it this year. Had some really good days in August on the rig. I guess a few months ago the FLW made it illegal in their tour T's for 2014.

Members basscat123 Posted October 8, 2013 Members Posted October 8, 2013 Awesome day Sprint. Good job...
Sprint21fter Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Champ 188, we finished 2nd in the Winter Series. Lost an absolute toad early in the morning that would have put us over the top as well. Caught everything we weighed on a 5/8oz jig alot of the other keepers were caught on a wart inside of mainlake and secondary points.
Champ188 Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Congrats, Sprint. Like I said, that bunch is as tough as they come.
