mic Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 My first job in the Air Force was as an Air Traffic Controller at Little Rock AFB. I used to love when A-10 Warthogs would visit, and better yet, do some practice laps. They would turn on a dime and could fly fast or slow. Amazingly, the AF was going to get rid of them before the first desert storm. I have seen pics of them coming back with half a wing shot off and with a missle stuck in one. Found this video this morning and thought I would share. PS... If you hear the gun, your already dead . Go Blue
Justin Spencer Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Very cool, I want one! "The problem with a politician’s quote on Facebook is you don’t know whether or not they really said it." –Abraham Lincoln Tales of an Ozark Campground Proprietor Dead Drift Fly Shop
Wayne SW/MO Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 I wore the blue. In my time the F-105 was the workhorse and the F-104 the thoroughbred. They had a lot of combat plane configurations at that time and the gatling gun was just making it's appearance. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
mic Posted October 31, 2013 Author Posted October 31, 2013 I didn't work any of the 105's, but I did work the F4s. They were impressive, but they didn't turn well.
Old plug Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 I have always admired the A-10. A-10s buzz around here all the time. Sometimes down to almost tree top level. They are really poetry in motion. I spent over 4 yrs on the deck of a old WW 2 era aircraft carrier. Was a very exciting place to be with modern jets and a shorter narrower deck than we have today. Have had everything under the sun try to take my head off. From chunk to whole aircraft skidding over the deck to hung ordnance including many many hung rockets from those rocket pods and one 500 lb bomb.
mic Posted November 1, 2013 Author Posted November 1, 2013 I thought about joining the Navy, but then came to my senses. I don't think the Navy was for me, but I sure would have liked to spent a day in an overlook on an active deck... now that is poetry in motion.
lee G. Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 We live under the A 10 flight path to the gun range at Ft Leonard Wood, sometimes they are really low thru here!
moguy1973 Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 When I was in Boy Scouts we would visit Ft. Leonard Wood every year and go out to the range to watch the A10's and F4'S do some bombing and strafe runs....The sound that the A10's Gatling gun would make was awesome..Sounded like someone ripping a big fart, and the bullets would hit the target before you would hear the sound of the gun shooting...Fun times... -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
mic Posted November 1, 2013 Author Posted November 1, 2013 First hand... AWESOME. I didn't get to see that in 20 years. Now I know why they flew through Little Rock... On the way from the base LA. Wayne SW/MO Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 At fire power demonstrations in the early 60's it was common to build a concrete block wall and the turn a stationary 20mm M-61 Vulcan loose on it. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
