mic Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 I posted a video of my favorite modern airplane on another thread and that started some cool discussions that lead to this: What is your favorite plane(s)? My all time favorite is from WWII, Korea, and 'nam... the Vought F4U Corsair. I love the lines, the story, and it durablitiy. I have three modern favorites: The A-10 which I already talked about on the first thread. You can't go wrong with SR71... how many world records does it hold. Finally, I have a personal connection to the U2 that I supported once. I was blessed to do a reenlistment in front of one.
mic Posted November 1, 2013 Author Posted November 1, 2013 My Grandfather flew those in WW2, but in the states ferring from factory to site. The story goes his wingman ran into a mountain in the Rockies. He turned his wings in, lost his commission, and became a weather tech. Like me he did the full hitch and retired. I always wondered how much of that story was true, but he died when I was young.
Wayne SW/MO Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 For me I think it's the P-51 and the F-104. The 104 was a missile with a man in it at the time. It had such a small wing area that the empty cartridges from its cannons were retained so as not to change its attitude to quickly. It was capable of mach 2, very fast at the time. But in all fairness you have to love this old gal. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
mic Posted November 1, 2013 Author Posted November 1, 2013 Don't forget about the Spirt of Missouri. I've seen this one up close once at Whiteman. The first time I ever saw one it was from the side, and I thought: wow this is a lot smaller than I thought it would be. Then I walked around the front...
lee G. Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 My youngest son has been in the Air Force 5 yrs now, hes stationed at Kedena AFB, works on KC 135s
moguy1973 Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 With my dad working for McDonnell Douglas for many years before retiring from there, I got to see a lot of really cool planes. A couple of my favorite were the F4-E Wild Weasel (which my dad had a hand in designing parts for) and the T-45 Goshawk (in which he also had a part). My true favorites though were the VTOL aircraft. The AV-8B Harrier and the V-22 Osprey are amazing aircraft in what they can do, especially the Osprey with it's huge twin propellers. mic Posted November 1, 2013 Author Posted November 1, 2013 Your right Wayne... The buff is still the biggest and badest of them all. Best thing is to watch one land in cross wind. The plane and wheels are on a pivot so the plane faces the wind and wheels face the runway... and it crabs into a landing.
jpb2187 Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 Awesome! My grandfather designed parts for the Goshawk also!
