Feathers and Fins Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Hog, most bucks I have seen "in towns" seem to be 120 or less granted im not up by you but I have thought about the subject. My speculation is more and more people in town = more cars on the road hitting them before they can get to the size they use to in town. Now on the fringe of town ive seen some nice deer but seems size of intown deer has gotten smaller. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
sms_alum Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 I live in Ballwin and have a bigger buck in the neighborhood along with a ton of does. Can't seem to get the neighborhood association to budge on letting me hunt though. How did you get access to hunt that much in Ballwin?
Kayser Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 I live in Kirkwood now, and I'm curious if there are any public archery areas in the area? Or is it just private land where you need to know someone? WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
sms_alum Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Sugar creek has a managed hunt you can put in for, but I think they only give out a few spots. The closest public land for you would probably be Howell Island in the valley.
Hog Wally Posted November 15, 2013 Author Posted November 15, 2013 The hoops u have to jump through to hunt these areas r ridiculous.
sms_alum Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Yeah, I haven't pushed it much because we have a nice lease I can hunt on the weekends in Lewis county. I have an insurance policy that covers me but when I read through all the rules for Ballwin and Sunset Hills it really seemed ridiculous. If I remember correctly you have to have written permission from each connecting neighbor and let the police department know every time you will be out hunting. I have a place I can hunt in wildwood, but it's pretty close to Clayton road and I can only imagine what would happen if I had to drag a deer off in front of some of those people. My wife thinks I'm a little crazy to drive 2 1/2 hours to hunt deer when we can see them from our deck most mornings, but I guess that's life in the suburbs.
jdmidwest Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 I would think the population density of the deer would keep the nutrition down and the rack sizes also. They also need good genetics to grow a rack too. They tried to get a hunt going over here in a local town, but it was voted down. I have seen several bucks in that area of the day, but none even touching the 100 class. There is an albino or two, lots of does and fawn. I spoke with some of the MDC researchers that did the study and they did not mention many wallhangers in the bunch. But the population density was high enough to justify a hunt to thin them down. Geoff Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 There's a horse of a 14 point roaming around the woods by my house in SoCo. Last year he was a good 12 point, my friend has seen him as well, and last year found both his sheds. We have thought many times about how we could arrow it and not freak anyone out but keep coming up short. "When you do things right, people wont be sure you've done anything at all."
