Members C&R Posted December 7, 2013 Members Posted December 7, 2013 Has anyone tried any polarized, single vision sunglasses? I am not talking about the ones that are bifocals- the ones with the magnifying part on the bottom of the lens. I am looking for a pair of polarized, wrap around glasses where the entire lens is magnified, like reading glasses. I have tried the clip on polarized shades over my glasses, but they are a pain and don't keep the sun from coming in on the sides. That is why I am hoping to find a wrap around type frame. Boring subject, but what else are we to talk about when there is ice, snow and single digit temps here for a while. Thanks for any leads,,,,,,,,,,, Bobby
LarrySTL Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 I think you have a few choices but maybe only a few. One is one of the big name brand sunglasses companies, Oakley, Wiley, etc. You'll get a great product but I suspect it will be north, maybe noticably north, of $500 if you want a prescription built into it. Cocoons, see BPS or any of the other big boxes. They go over your regular glasses, not a clipon. Maybe a little clunky looking but some folks like em and they come in different models and sizes. I dont know about a magnifying correction, but you can find out online in 5 minutes. $ 50 + Sorta-like-cocoons but no particular brand. Make sure they are polarized and block all the things you need blocked. No prescription and I dont know if you can find em with magnification. Some of them are pretty clunky looking ( yes mine are)but they work fine, they cost $ 15 - $ 20 so I dont cuss once a year when I break them by sitting or stepping on them, and they dont cost the $ 500 plus that my oddball and bifocal prescription would cost at a regular glasses place. Target, Schnucks, sometimes WallyWorld, etc. One other possibility, is ordering prescription glasses online. Some places are $ 39 or so for their standard frames, single vision, in normal prescriptions. I've never tried them but I know somebody who wears them fulltime and is perfectly happy with them. http://intervenehere.com
LarrySTL Posted December 7, 2013 Posted December 7, 2013 Oops..where'd the paragraphs go ? Sorry bout that. http://intervenehere.com
Al Agnew Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 You should also be able to get whatever prescription polarized glasses you want from your eye doctor. I've got prescription polarized bifocals. You can also now get polarized prescription glasses that change with the brightness of the light, which is probably what my next pair will be.
Buzz Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 I guess I'm not understanding. You want full magnifying polarized sunglasses, right? I don't think I've ever seen anything like that. I've had good results with my prescription polarized bifocals. They take some getting used to, but once you get used to them they work great. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
Members C&R Posted December 8, 2013 Author Members Posted December 8, 2013 So Al, you say you are aware of single vision sunglasses that are polarized (where the lens has only one power, not bifocals). That is what I am wanting. So far I have not found that combination yet. And if so, you got them from your eye doctor?
Greasy B Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 I went through two pairs of polarized glasses this year. The first suffered from minor scratches that were irritating but tolerable until one more scratch that aligned perfectly with my line of sight made them unusable. The second pair I only owned for a couple of weeks when they were blown out of the boat on an incredibly windy day. No top dollar classes for me, $50.00 max. Mitch f Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 When you say the "entire glass is magnified" that sounds different from prescription glasses. Don't know how you could see 10 ft away. Unless your talking about half glasses. Anyway, I had LASIK a couple of years ago so like Greasy, I'm not buying any expensive polarized glasses anymore. moguy1973 Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 The problem you are going to find with wrap around magnafied glasses is depending on the strength you need they may not be able to make lenses for it that aren't coke bottle thick. My wife ran into this a couple years ago when she got polarized sunglasses that had her prescription on them from the eye doctor. All the "cool" looking wrap around style glasses that she liked, and that fit her nicely, were going to be super thick because of the refractive properties the lens had to have for her prescription. If you don't need a lot of correction, it shouldn't be a big problem for them to make lenses though... -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Members C&R Posted December 9, 2013 Author Members Posted December 9, 2013 Moguy, thx for the post. Seems like your wife had made what I am looking for. Just want a mild power 1.5 magnification made for polarized, wrap around sunglasses. Does that sound like what ur wife had?? Do u remember what the cost was??
