Lancer09 Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 I'm just looking for information if anyone knows anything About vintage fly rods. I recently acquired a Wright and McGill Denco 8.5 foot 7weight. From looking them up the green thread wraps indicate it was made sometime in the early sixties. It has No. 13 on it, does anyone know what that means? I can't find much info about them and eBay has them listed anywhere from 35 dollars to 135 or so. Just looking to find out if I have a fun glass small mouth rod or if I should start looking around to collectors to sell. The cork is in decent shape with some pitting and staining but not bad given the age. Thanks for Any possible help.
Flysmallie Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 I'll give you 35 for it to find out if it's a good smallmouth rod.
Lancer09 Posted December 18, 2013 Author Posted December 18, 2013 For that price I'll work on figuring that out myself! Althoughost you'd be Tripeling what I paid for the thing. It does cast OK with a six wt. Line, and I fished it yesterday, but a 7 Line is definitely in It's future.
fishinwrench Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Doggonit....That's a nasty skid mark it's got on it. Love to look at those old rods..... Zero desire to fish with one though. We've come a long way haven't we?
Wayne SW/MO Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 A lot of those old rods clean up real well. They generally lack decent guides in quality and numbers, but make good starting material to learn to wrap. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Gavin Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 $50 would be a good offer for that rod...I'd give it a 4-5 on a 10 scale in terms of condition. Put some varnish on those dried out guide wraps and go fish it...have fun. It is not worth restoring.
Wayne SW/MO Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 It is not worth restoring. I would disagree Gavin. Good fiberglass is worth restoring if the original has little collective value. Glass has some good qualities that were left behind in the drive for faster rods. They're great for throwing fluff. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Flysmallie Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 They're great for throwing fluff. Agreed. My next rod will be glass for sure. I screwed up and gave all mine to Jason. Now I just gotta find the right one.
Lancer09 Posted December 19, 2013 Author Posted December 19, 2013 That skid Mark on the bottom stripping guide and one other scuff Mark are about all That's wrong with it. What kind of varnish would you recommend coating it with?
