Sadly, I don't think the WPA would work in today's society. We give too much away in welfare so people can sit at home. Doubt if you could get many to turn out for the tough labor required to do the work required.

It might work if they got to work to get paid. The government would only pay part of the salary the employer would. Pay the rest.

I understand your point about. Lazy. My son is a contractor and I got a little upset a couple years ago because he had these because he hired a couple of Mexican fellas. That come in the country for a certain length of time then go back to Mexico. He has rehired them a couple times. He pays them about $10 a hour. He said you cannot find young american kids that will work steady.

Old Plug and others,

You are exactly right about the "WPA" type of programs. Those programs WILL WORK and they have in the past provided the nation with very beneficial things to enjoy and that made our country prosper. I am all for people working for their money instead of getting a hand out. As far as the contractor hiring people from outside the country to work for him I can just say that foreigners have worked in the U.S for many many years. Likewise Americans have worked in other countries as well. I had a friend who spent most of his Engineering career in Saudi Arabia. So I am not against others working here in the U.S. But we have to ask ourselves if we are doing wrong by hiring outsiders for a lesser wage than our own people can exist on in our society. The people that come and go usually do not own property, pay property taxes etc. and it is easier for them to survive on less money. I also believe I am correct in that they do not pay the same income taxes as an American citizen as they are not citizens themselves. When you couple all this together it makes their "take home pay per dollar of wages" higher. This type of practice could eventually siphon off more and more jobs for our own citizens and that leaves a very bad taste in my mouth.

As far as finding people that are willing to show up for work and do a good job consider this: If you were working for a wage where you were required to have some skills and knew that you absolutely could not financially make it on that wage........I don't believe we would want to go to work either. As far as not finding people willing to work......I have several friends that are in the contracting business or are construction workers themselves and they have no problem finding employees or getting a good days work out of them. I hope your contractor can find another "pool" of people to obtain workers from and that they will be full tax paying American Citizens.

I pretty much agree with Walcrabass. There are plenty of people in mid-Missouri who are able and willing to work for our local home builders--but they expect a living wage in return. I know a few of them. But the home builders pocket more cash for themselves if they hire their labor from south of the border, and they do.

I'd love to see WPA-type projects that require hard work but pay well. I don't think the government would have any trouble filling the jobs.

Bill B my son was paying them $10 a hour that. Was a few years ago. That was about $3 a hour over anyone else.

What i would propose would be a full. wage with the government paying a portion of the wages through the contractor, factor or what not. It would be cheaper than paying unemployment. And the person would have to work at that job are loose the unemployment also. The goverment pay out would be time limited as well. It is a pipe dream this congress today could never get it done in anyway.

My son is in St Louis. A lot of things he shares with 3 or 4 friends that are contractors in you my say different trades. They tend to hire each other most of the time. These two fellas from Mexico were here for 5 months on a card then had to return home. I do not agree much with that program either. But the $10 he was paying them was $3 more than anyone else was. that was above the minium wage at that time. I have no idea what it was the last year. He bought them punch everyday as well.

Programs like this will work if you can find people that WILL WORK. I have worked for the same company for the last 35 years and the labor pool of people that will work has been steadily declining for the last 20 years. My company pays a good wage with great benefits and the jobs are not that difficult. You just have to be able to think on your feet, pay attention to what you are doing, and do some manual labor, all inside in a heated and air conditioned building. But people are getting too picky about what job they will take. They don't want to start out working evenings or graveyard shift. They won't work weekends. They want a job where they can sit at a computer all day and not do any manual work. They have been brought up with no work ethic. All the schools want to teach them is to learn everything electronically instead of using the brain that the good Lord gave all of us. Then they come home from school and it's back to the computer to play games instead of playing and doing things outside. Heck, parents are afraid to give their kids chores to do anymore for fear they might hurt their feelings or be labeled as bad parents. My company is about to add on 150 new jobs in the next year in our plant and it is going to be a challenge to find enough people that want to work to fill them.

Charliehorse Jigs,

I would truly appreciate knowing what company you are working for as I believe we need to get the word out that someone will be hiring 150 new employees at a good wage, benefits, air conditioned, and heated. Please share this with us as I am sure it can benefit many families in the area.
