Again what a great picture. I'd love to see another Bobcat, but I have ZERO desire to shoot one. I would on the other hand like to drop a hammer on about 100 feral hogs.

Awesome. They are one good looking animal IMO. When I did a lot of coyote hunting I could never bring myself to take the shot on the rare sightings.

Same here. They're just way too cool and getting rarer and rarer or at least it seems that way.

Great picture Marty,

I'da crakapayowed him in a sec. I love to look at them, even better up close and in hand. Beautiful animal. I don't think some people realize how many of them there are, because, well, they are a cat that is mostly nocturnal. They don't quite draw attention like a murder of crows in the front yard. Start looking for tracks and running game cams and you'll soon realize there are plenty, probably too many.

I always figured there was about a ~30 quail and ~10 turkey net gain for everyone one I was lucky enough to shoot. They are a hard animal to get a shot at.

With the lack of fence rows and idle grass patches they probably don't find many quail either. As for turkeys, no shortage in the areas I roam.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

I have seen more bobcats than quail the last 2 years. Shot one under my tree stand this year, only thought I had was how many quail did I save. My son had 3 laying on a log last year but didn't shoot any because it was prime deer time in the evening. I will probably do some predator hunting over the holidays, have a new range finder to try out.

I like quail more than the average person, but I wouldn't shoot a Bobcat to save a quail even if it would work. The problems with quail numbers are multifactorial and I don't think Bobcat are on the Top Ten. Habitat loss is huge. I would also think that feral hogs and coyotes impact quail more than Bobcats.

Anybody still kill Roadrunners to save quail?

No. That would be illegal. Unlike Bobcats, which are in season. A season set by biologists.

I take every legal shot at a coyote I can and would love to shoot some pigs too. I'm also really considering getting more into trapping to control the predators on a few of my favorite pieces of hunting property. Raccoons, foxes, skunks, possums. I almost feel guilty I don't put more effort into eliminating some of them.

Thanks for the replies and great discussion. Over the years I have trapped and called in bobcats. I remember when we did not have any, then we could take them South of I-70. Now everywhere. In my opinion there are the most lethal predators we have in the state. Ok I know we have lions I'm not including them. Ever watched a house cat hunt? Multiply that tenfold and you have the bobcat. We once watched one stalk a squirrel and jump to take it off a tall birdfeeder. Out in the open, that tree rat went limp instantly. Do I like to see them? You bet ya but would not in an instant hesitate taking one out in season if given the chance. This one in the photo no even if I had a weapon. I was on the road and don't condone road hunting. They are cool and have there place in the wild but we as hunters and the predators that now keep things in balance.

I rely on the various state DNR's to set wildlife regulations appropriately. I have NO beef with any licensed hunter, fisherman, or trapper behaving ethically within the laws and regulations. Use legal methods , stay within legal limits , and hunt or trap only in season.

Lots of people on here seem to only follow the game laws they agree with and other than that they kn better than the DNR.

I have no desire to hunt Bobcats. I'd rather watch them eat a squirrel or a turkey or rabbit ir whatever. I can understand where some folks do want to hunt them.

I do think it's folley to kill a Bobcat because you're worried about quail numbers just as it was folley to shoot roadrunners because of any impact they may have had on quail.

IF you are worried about quail. Look into habitat restoration and replanting native seed grasses they rely on. Lots of studies and programs out there for that.
