Cousin and I just returned from the Current above Akers. Caught a chain pickerel, which was a first for me. Not knowing the regulations or ethics we turned him loose. Reading up on it today I guess they're not as rare as I thought and maybe we should have kept him and ate him. Any thoughts?

Fishing was pretty good. We were throwing mainly spoons and jigs but for fun late in the trip I hooked on a wiggle wart and a nice rainbow slammed it so hard it knocked the reel out of my hand. Turned out to be my fish of the trip.

The Current in winter is fantastic, but you all know that.

Never eaten a pickerel but caught a lot on the Current and 11 point. Neat fish.

Looks like a good trip and a bow on a wart to boot. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Chain pickerel are pretty common in the Current and Jacks Fork. You'll find them in any backwater and in the slack water areas of the larger pools. Farther down on the Current, below Powdermill, you can't hardly fish in the backwaters with those expensive jerkbaits because the pickerel will bite them off. And the Jacks Fork below Alley Spring has lots of them. Some locals eat them regularly, but like all the pike they have those Y bones that are bothersome--you have to know how to clean them to get ride of the bones.

There's no such thing, as a bad day fishing!

Pickerel were very common in New England when I lived there, they are very good eating, but as mentioned above, very boney.

Ham needs one of those for his 52 species quest.

Pickeral are very common on some places I fish on the 11pt, it's not uncommon to catch 2 or 3 every trip. Never ate one, but they sure will attack a jerkbait!!

Good for you Hank, I've caught a few pickerel between the Park & Cedar, but they seem to be more common from Welch on down. Glad you had a good trip.
