shark bait Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Put in at Emerald Beach Sat. I keep reading about jigging a spoon and decided to try it.I have had some spoons but never tried it before. We found some fish in 30ft and I dropped the spoon on them. I caught 2 pretty quick. Both good keepers. One a SM, the other a football K. Moved up the point a little and didn't get any more so moved back and caught 2 more then they quit. Fished a jig, a jerk bait and A rig going part way back into a cove, nothing. Went to another point, found more fish in 30 ft and caught several more on the spoon. All my fish were keepers. Best five about 16 or 17 lbs. I think I'm "hooked" on spooning! Caught Ks, SM and LM. Champ188 Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 I gotta start reading more articles. I haven't caught a 17-pound sack in months.
Bill Babler Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 That is just a super day. I have not came close to that this Winter. I can grit and put together 13.5 to 15 if I'm lucky. I know bo has hit some LM and upped that but up the White River that is a true Monster bag. For 15 pounds, they pretty much have to be all LM. Of course you can slide a nice Jaw in but if a K or two is in that limit, you are very hard pressed to get to 17#, unless you have a 6 pounder or up as a Kicker. Great day with a spoon, that is just fantastic. Thanks for the report Good Luck http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
Old plug Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 I would like to do more of that up here at LOZ but for some reason it is not a very productive thing around here even when you know exactly where the fish are. I have a place about 200 yards or so from my chair that always has a big gang of fish on bunched up on it in the winter.i have seen. A few others try to fish that bunch in the winter with no success. I did see one guy i believe was snagging catch a pretty nice catfish. I just wonder if having thread fin shad makes the difference down there.
abkeenan Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 I gotta start reading more articles. I haven't caught a 17-pound sack in months. They were SPOON fed.....duh. Of course they are going to be fatter/heavier.
merc1997 Bo Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 that was really a nice bunch of bass. remember the hardest thing to do in catching a bass is to be able to locate them. no one can catch one if they are not putting their lure in front of one. great job in locating them. that is the hardest part. bo

I would say a big 10-4 on the thread-fin deal http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com

I just wonder if having thread fin shad makes the difference down there. you do have more gizzard shad on loz than threadfin. however, big bass do hang out with the gizzard shad, and can be caught. swimming big grubs of blg bladed single spins are a couple of methods that come to mind that will work. i think there might be times that one of your big worms might do the trick around those gizzard shad schools. it is something that will require some time trying different techniques to catch those suspended bass. one other bait that i have success on dealing with bass suspended around gizzard shad is a rocker head twin spin. most people do not even know what that bait is, but it is a big bass bait. it is better known for winter fishing, but it is also effective in the summer. bo
Alex Heitman Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Is this what you are talking about Bo on the twin spin? Looks good. http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/War_Eagle_Twin_Spin_Spinnerbaits/descpage-WETWSPI.html
Old plug Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Merc that all works but not in the winter and that sort of puzzels me. What is worse, is right now the lake is FULL of gizzard shad about the size of those thread fin down there. I will admit At my age I do not push it maybe like I should in the cold. I think i should add here i do not really target bass like you all do down there with spoons.i am either jigging for white bass, hybrids or Catfish. Big catfish are one of favorite things to catch on spoons. Those like larger gar are a poor mans salt water experience.
