moguy1973 Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 For the first time, well, ever that I can remember, the Meramec River at I-44 in Fenton is frozen over solid with this cold blast we've had the last few days. It's still flowing some at 141 but if you look down river towards the Valley Park boat ramp it's frozen all the way across. Guess it takes a couple sub zero days and nights and really low flows to get it like that. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Haris122 Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 darn. That's something new. All up the river to the bend, or just at certain spots?
Al Agnew Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 The last time we had a real stretch of very cold weather, a couple guys I know decided to get on the Meramec at Sand Ford the first halfway warm day at the end of the cold snap. The river was still open water in the middle of the pools but had shelf ice all along the banks. They took off down river, and went several miles downstream before stopping to fish. They noticed that there were a lot of chunks of ice floating by them as they fished. They went on a little farther downstream after fishing the first place, and then decided they'd head back upstream... It turned out that their boat wake had broken up all that shelf ice, and it had floated down to the tail of each pool and collected at the head of each riffle, forming ice dams! They had a difficult time even getting through some of the riffles.
moguy1973 Posted January 8, 2014 Author Posted January 8, 2014 darn. That's something new. All up the river to the bend, or just at certain spots? From what I could see from 44 it was frozen all the way up to the bend from the 44 bridge. And from 141 downstream it looked frozen from the boat ramp all the way down as far as I could see. Under the 141 bridge it is just frozen on the edges. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson

My office is in the 270/44 industrial park right next to the river south of 44. I crossed the bridge yesterday and thought the same thing. Then I went home 141 and noticed it as well. Blazerman Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 This was taken Monday just upstream from Redhorse. Completely frozen.
Haris122 Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I was crossing into Illinois and back Wednesday, and even most of the Mississippi, except a narrow channel in the center was pretty much ice covered as well. Didn't look like 2 barges could pass by each other even, that's how narrow even it was.
Hog Wally Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 She is icy again. What a tough winter we are having. I have only had the boat out once Usually the locals are killing the crappie about now. I have seen nothing but a joy rider and a couple trappers
moguy1973 Posted January 25, 2014 Author Posted January 25, 2014 Supposed to get another frigid blast early next week again. Gonna be a late spawn again this year me thinks. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Hog Wally Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I second that Meat eaters will be catching bass off their beds for the frying pan. Maybe it'll be high water enough so spawn isn't screwed up but it screws up the fishing
