Members Jay Barnes Posted January 16, 2014 Members Posted January 16, 2014 I have a 16' jon w a 40 horse prop. I have been considering a River Runner prop protector but not sure it is worth the money. Does anyone have experience with this product and does it work?
fishinwrench Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 In my experience they seem to turn what would be a glancing blow into a solid hit more times than not. And in gravel it increases the odds of a small rock getting pinched between prop and the guard. I prefer to just slow down and run without any "guards".
Members Jay Barnes Posted January 17, 2014 Author Members Posted January 17, 2014 Makes sense! Thanks MFU
grizwilson Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I have one on a 9.9, works fine as long as you slow down as Wrench says. On one occasion it hung a rock between the prop and the river runner, but at my "idle " speed just killed the motor. That said, if you want to try one, I may have one to fit your 40 it is new, put a jet foot on my 25 never installed it. Will sell for 1/2 new price if interested..... g “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein
Members Jay Barnes Posted January 18, 2014 Author Members Posted January 18, 2014 I appreciate the offer Griz. I think I am just gonna save some time and money and continue without one. I have read on other sites that they greatly reduce speed when on open water.

Wayne SW/MO Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I've seen both used in the NW. I think the River Runner would be best here. there isn't much area for a rock to wedge in on them. I think the other post are right that a pitch fork style could be trouble. The River Runner is billed as a deflector, rather then a guard and I think its meant to be the sacrificial part when the motor gets kicked up. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Members Dane Pruitt Posted January 26, 2014 Members Posted January 26, 2014 I have one. Pro's lets the motor slide on gravel shoals keeping the skeg from digging into bottom. Does deflect some gravel from going thru prop. Con's drastically reduces efficiency of prop. Causes disturbance of water flow cavitation. does NOT protect prop from rock strike. First day I had it broke blade off 4 blade solas very upset at that one. River runner caused motor to turn catching blade on rock side of down stroke. Moss hangs up more easily in motor. Acts as shovel if trying to lift motor out of mud, sand, moss etc... Catches branches between prop and guard. I would not buy another and take it off most of the time. Go slow. I think jack plate would be better investment to raise motor.
Members Jay Barnes Posted February 1, 2014 Author Members Posted February 1, 2014 Thanks Dane. I think you are right about the jack plate.
