Kind of surprised no one has posted this in the Conservation Issues area or commented on it yet with all the attention given to Cougar sightings (the four legged ones) :-) !

http://www.news-leader.com/article/20140116/LIFE06/301160026/DNA-confirms-animal-killed-state-grey-wolf

MDC has been explaining to everyone the Cougars sighted in MO are just young males passing thru but here we have a seemingly healthy female Grey Wolf in the prime of breeding age ! Could it be that all that howling we hear at this time of year (mating season) isn't coming from just our local coyotes ??? Hmmm.....

The animal pictured in the article looks a lot different, up close, than the typical Coyote and I applaud the hunter for recognizing it and turning the carcass over to MDC for testing.

I don't understand why the guy killed it. Pisses me off actually. There's no way he mistook it for a coyote. 80 lbs is way bigger than 30 lbs. I just hate that people's instincts are to kill these animals that they're not familiar with. Makes absolutely no sense unless the animal is actually threatening their livestock. Sad to see such a beautiful animal killed for no reason.

Being one of the biggest, soft-hearted dog persons around, I have to admit that picture of the dead animal in the article was pretty tough for me to look at as Wolves are supposedly what our domestiic dogs came from.

Also. I've hunted coyotes for a lot of years in my younger days and that isn't even the right color. I've seen some variations from very light to almost black, but not that coloring or markings. If I had seen that I don't know that I would have thought wolf, but I know i would have had dog cross my mind. I've had farm dogs come to my call on rare occasions so I know it's possible.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

I'm from maduson county and there or a lot of coyote hunters around I'm not one and I'm a dog lover but the wolf population around yellowstone has had a real effect on the elk and other wild life I watch a pack take down a moose and I've seen the effect. Not saying this guy was right but they will kill a domestics dog just for sport.

I think people hate wolves more than snakes some days. I wish my X wouldn't have destroyed my photo albums I would be happy to post pictures of me laying with my wolves ( NOT HYBRIDS ) We were members of the pack our boys were more protected in our yard or in the house than if the marines had been on guard and never not one time did they show aggression toward us or friends so long as we were home. Come over when we were not and you took your life in to your hands.

I miss them and would not hesitate to have another in my life. Wolves are part of nature and you cannot mistake one for a coyote, it would be possible to mistake one for a large Sheppard though which makes me concerned when I hear of people shooting them in states like MO where they are rare. I am NOT saying this was a macho jackass but I do have concerns about people making proper ID.

As to hunting them, Predator control is needed yotes are getting out of control in some places Wolves can become an issue and I have nothing against controlling the population but it needs to be done under strict regulation just like any other hunting or fishing and if you get caught just shooting one for fun then get the fine.

It could have been attacking his livestock. Or maybe he just mistook it for a deer. Seems like many are fast to condemn a man without any facts.

I try to never flame anyone for shooting something when I don't know the circumstances. I like wolves, I used to "sponsor" is that is the correct term a pack of wolves, they send pictures and updates and you send them money, The Sawtooth Pack if I remember correctly, but that was several years ago. Having hunted and shot coyotes you don't always have the option of glassing them over and analyzing their appearance, sometimes its simply there he is "bang". Also size is not always apparent until you are close either or have something to compare it to. Bottom Line is he shot it, he apparently hasn't been charged by the MDC for shooting it, so I guess I would tend to give him a pass.
