No Lettuce Today!

The snow gods have delayed this years crop already. For the last several years, lettuce and other cole crops have hit the dirt on Feb. 14.

Today, the permafrost is deeper than ever. The raised beds still hold stalks and roots from last fall's crops, frozen in place. The 3 inch ice layer that has blanketed everything around here finally melted today. But the weather turned in an hour and flash froze it back and put some white stuff back on.

How is every one else's garden doing?

I've reached the point where I've started to think about it. The snow finally melted today.

Tomato, pepper, onion, herb seeds are sprouted and under lights in the basement. I'll start a few more things this week or next. I've got about 3 inches of frozen snow over the beds right now.

Contractors round here are wondering how far down the frost line has gone. This has been one of the longest cold spells in a while. Not only is stuff froze on top of the ground, the ground is frozen pretty deep and will need more time to thaw.

Hopefully, the raised beds will thaw enough in the next couple of days to pull the old stuff out. Then I can put the glass covers on and dry them out some. Maybe plant some next weekend.

I have a feeling the cold has done a number on the bee hives. I have piles of dead bees in front of each hive. With temps in the 60's this week, I will be able to go in and take a look for the first time since October and see how they are doing.

Going to start tomato and pepper seeds in the basement tomorrow.

I got to start my gardening next week in those few warm days. but its not veggies its all ornamentals. mostly cleaning out seting down compost around them. I am bot very good with veggies but give me. a hosta , heuchera or some annual flower and I shine vut I want to say from the pictures you all put on here last year there were some of the best kept gardens I have seen. Only thing I start early is a lot of rosemary. I put a lot of pots of it put for been a pretty good deer repellant.
