Quillback Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Launched at Eagle Rock today with my buddy Jeb in the boat and we did some running and gunning. Fishing spots where I've picked up some fish the last few weeks and tried a few pre-spawn spots that we hoped might start to hold some fish. We did find fish on secondary points with timber, a rocky bank or two and inside a cove a bit. Most fish were still in that 15-25 foot zone, though we did find a few on a rocky point with some wind on it in 10 FOW. We caught 25 between the 2 of us, but probably only a 1/2 dozen keepers and none over 2.5 lbs. Green Pumpkin tubes for me, and Jeb got fish on a variety of stuff, A-rig, finesse jig, jigging spoon, and a Keitech paddle tail. A mixture of spots and LM's, probably a ratio 2/1 in favor of LM's. Water temp was 41 when we started and by the time we left, we saw 44 in a few spots. Lots of boats for a Friday.
dtrs5kprs Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Chilly old pond. Need some warm nights and warm rains to kick start the thing.
jmes Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Great report, nothing beats a good day out on the lake with friends
Champ188 Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 I'd take 25 tomorrow and not complain a bit. Donna and I are headed up early in the morning. Thanks much for the report, QB.
Hazbin Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 We took off from Emerald Beach at 10:30 and we were mainly marking brush pile waypoints and routes for a new Lowrance. We did some cursory fishing in between and ended up in Roaring River. We threw the rig mostly and only picked up two short LM's and back in RR on a short steep 45° rocky bank caught 4 keeper LM 's on jerk bait all within about 25 yrd's. They were all in 8' to 10' of water. The temp gage was reading 47.3. It appeared to be a warmer belt of water in that area as it got colder as we went on up. The bite came on a long dead pause (20 sec's. or better) and some hit quite sharp, but very lethargic on the reel in. We were back at the dock at 4:00.
Bill Babler Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Anglers in Action is hosting both a team event and a Solo-Pro event. That is the reason for all the boats. Have heard there are already over 100 boats for Sunday. Probably going to be 50 to 75 for tomorrow, in the cold and rain. It is just suspose to be miserable. High of 43 with rain and wind. Yuck. I'm working on tackle. Bite is starting abit from Baxter to Kimberling City. Beck had a pretty good day today fishing that area. A-Rig. I pulled out at 4:30 at Shell Knob and had surface temp of 46. Lots and lots of fisherman. I only got to fish a couple of hours, but Quill and I saw the same thing. Mine came on a jig on the chunk with some timber. 20 to 25 dragging the big jig. 3 small keeper swimmer blacks. and a couple of shorts. No K's. It is 7:14 PM and there are still boats running in front of the Lodge, coming out of Long Creek. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
Quillback Posted March 8, 2014 Author Posted March 8, 2014 I was looking through my log from last year, I went fishing around the Big M area last March 7(2013). I noted a water temp that day of 44. Saw 44 for a high yesterday. We did have a cold spring last year, but a milder winter. Funny how the temps are about the same as last year on this day.
kjackson Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I launched at Holiday late in the morning and went out in search of walleyes. Had what might have been two bites and saw one boat land what looked like a 6-8-pounder that as a bit on the thin side for a pre-spawn fish. I'm thinking it was a male, but it was a ways away. Finally gave up on the 'eyes and went exploring a bit with the idea that I might find crappies. Ended up in a warmish bay (46 degrees at one point) and caught a short largemouth on a jerkbait and had another make a pass.

Quill...might be wrong, but seems like last year temps stayed below 50 well into March, if not early April. Then it snowed in May. Did we do something wrong?
Quillback Posted March 8, 2014 Author Posted March 8, 2014 Looking through my notes, I see it hit 50 on 3/19, but dropped to 48 on 3/27, then into low to mid 50's on 4/5 and 4/12. 4/16 temps upper 50's and I noted male bass were starting to bed. Saw 62 on 5/7.
