Members lizard Posted March 29, 2014 Members Posted March 29, 2014 I'm seeing a lot of talk about this "zig jig".... I have never used one. I do tie my own jigs and have for years... seem to work for me. I did look the zig up and found their site. Seems to have a little different action than what I make up. Question is, are they really any different than any other jigs? I tend to stick to the fly rod but my wife and I are heading down to the NFTW in few weeks and she only uses a spinning rod. She does fairly well with a rooster-tail and I have tried to get her to throw jigs, but like the fly rod, she feels that there's just to much going on all at once with a jig and can't feel the bite. Is this zig jig any easer to use over a normal jig?
Ham Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 If you tie your own jig and are happy, don't change a thing. I think they are a very good jig, but they aren't magically better than other jigs. It isn't difficult, but it ain't easy. You have to work the jig and pay attention. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish

Ham Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 You might buy the wife a couple of Thomas Bouyant spoons in both sizs to try as well. Have her cast them down and across. She should vary her retrieve or at the very least raise and lower her rod tip while winding them in. They will get whacked. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. Members lizard Posted March 29, 2014 Members Posted March 29, 2014 Thanks Justin and Ham for the info. I have no problem catching them with the jigs I tie just looking for something else for my wife to throw. ( she is really stuck on the R-tails and in a pinch, sometimes the good ol rebel craw ) I think I have pretty much everything I like to use along with a truck load of the Rooster-tails for her, so we should be good to go. I am going to need to tie up a few more of my Marabou jigs but that shouldn't take long. I do have a large selection of 1/32 and some 1/16 oz, but thinking I might tie up some 1/8 just in case the water is moving. Good idea? Thanks again guys and looking forward to the 18th at Trout Island

Ham Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 My general rule of thumb is I use 1/32 oz on minimum flow, I use 1/16 oz on less than 1000 CFS, and 1/8 oz 1000 to 10000 CFS. I'bve got some 3/16 oz for heavier flows BUT I haven't fished them yet. But try different stuff. On different days this fish want different things Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. Members The Troutdoorsman Posted March 30, 2014 Members Posted March 30, 2014 Lizard, I have found on the NFoW that anything bigger than a 1/8 oz jig gets hung up behind and between rocks and gets broken off. Usually the fish are in either lazy mode and like an 1/8th or 1/16 oz jig (the lightest you can cast for about 50 to 75 ft) bounced off the bottom. Or in pursuit mode and like a rooster tail or a small crank like a rebel craw or a flicker shad. Either way if the water is off color yellow seems to work, if it's clear natural colors like brown and olive seem to work. Your gonna love Trout Island.
