SmallyWally Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Thanks for all of you for the input. To denjac, no I didn't get bit up there and was very disappointed because all conditions seemed right. I guess the corp owns that piece of property, but if I can find out a little history on the ownershp over the years it might solve the mystery. On another note, winter before last when the lake was way down I went beachcombing and found a perfect 3"x2" spear point. My daughter who has done some archeology digs (most notably three years ago in Syria )identified it as about 7,000 years old in the mid to late Archaic period. It is called a San Patrice point. The Sac river below the dam a few years ago was the site of a real important dig called The Big Eddy Site. Maybe the oldest artifacts ever found in North America. To Cool !!!!!! Congrats on the piece. Kindness is the language the blind can see and the deaf can hear.-- Mark Twain

This is interesting stuff -- any pictures on any of this would be greatly appreciated. John
hooked on crappie Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I have seen this fence at son's creek. There is another one north of Miller's boat dock on Soc Turnback arm. Sometime the farmers built the fences for hogs. With all the rocks in the ground, it would be easier to stack rocks than drive post, and pay for wire. ( LETS GO CATCH SOME WHITE BASS )
Members strat278 Posted April 3, 2014 Members Posted April 3, 2014 this might be the same fence its in that first big cove down from them boat docks north side of cove you can see when the lakes down some

( LETS GO CATCH SOME WHITE BASS ) Speaking of hogs when I was combing the beach across from chicken rock last year there was definitely signs of ferral hogs. The ground was rooted up down close to the lake back in a mud flat. No doubt it was hogs cause I saw the tracks too.
Sac River Jim Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 ferral hogs are really causing a problem directly south of chicken rock back in there east of son sac marina. they been tearing that area up bad for a couple three years now. are you guys talking down from springfield cove past the long bluff where it makes a bend and on the right side of the pocket theres a rock corner post on the point. weve caught some good walleye of the point in bass tounaments then go back the next day and theyre gone. go figure smh!!!!!
denjac Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Inside birch branch where I deer hunt I have found several points in the same area. But all have been broken or unfinished. Leads me to belive that area was a point making factory per say. Also in the same area is the pioneers cemetery. Lots of old grave markers in there. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. Where is the old pioneer's cemetery near Birch branch???
denjac Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 By water you can go straight in to birch branch all the way back on the right. You should be able to see the road that goes to the parking area. Pretty good walk from the parking area about 1/2 mile. Just follow the lane and there should be a sign that says cemetery going left off the trail. You can also drive to the parking area by driving across cc bridge for 4 or 5 miles. Road going into it on the left but hard to find as its not marked. hope that helps as my directions are kinda vague. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo.
