Seth Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 I'm not sure what you are better at, catching trout at night or finding mushrooms. You do very well at both.I envy folks who are good at finding morels.
DChance Posted April 22, 2014 Author Posted April 22, 2014 Nice haul. I don't have any spots yet. Just started hunting last year. Found about a dozen or so but it was late whenI got started . Only found one so far thos year. Sure hope they aren't up yet too well yet and the rain brings them up in my area. The craving is getting to me.
Bill Jr. Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 I went out in STL area on Sunday and found 6 small greys. My area is pretty dry and warm rain is all they need to really come out and we just got it! I would love to go out tomorrow morning but got to earn a paycheck so I'll be out this weekend after more rain on Thursday.
Fishslayer88 Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 Found a few this morning but I was following a couple guys who had twice what I found each but they got there at 6:00 this morning I didnt make it down till 8:00.
DChance Posted April 22, 2014 Author Posted April 22, 2014 what type of areas are producing? I am looking right at my house which is creek bottoms and flood plain areas. I basically look for sycamores and start my search in those areas???
Fishslayer88 Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 These were found along the James river under sycamores and a few around a big dead elm.
Ranger520vx Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Found 150 yesterday. Sure was great to have some fresh mushrooms.
DChance Posted April 24, 2014 Author Posted April 24, 2014 Ranger520vx where are you at? It says Pomme in your profile. I will be down to Pomme this weekend at the camper. Any areas that I should look for to hunt? would like to find some this weekend!! I found about 40 2 days ago in the Rolla area. All but 2 under one dead elm.
Fishin Hodge Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 I am a real amature compared to the 150+ guys on here, but for me elms have been the best for me this year. I am usually a sycamore finder, but you take em where you find em.
vonreed Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 As has been said. There is no secret place to find morels. They can be found anywhere. Dead elms are very spotty on having morels, but when they do have morels, there is usually a lot of them and they are nice sized. Sycamores have always been my go to tree to find em, but last year I found probably 20 pounds in cedars, maybe more. The same spot this year had a few so far on the hillsides in the cedars and then I walked up the bottom and would find a few under several of the bigger sycamores. Good luck.
