Skeeter ZX190 Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 I'm having troubles with my driver side trailer tire. It is a single axle trailer and the outside edge of the tire is down to the cords. This is the second tire I've put on there. The first time I thought it was because the tire was not balanced. But the new one I put on was, and now it is showing the same kind of wear only after a few thousand miles. Any ideas what is wrong? Thanks
Skeeter ZX190 Posted April 26, 2014 Author Posted April 26, 2014 Oh, the trailer was purchased new in 2009.
ozarkgunner Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Sounds like you have a bent axle Angler At Law
Nitroman Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Are you running actual STEEL BELTED RADIAL TRAILER TIRES, or STEEL BELTED RADIAL AUTOMOTIVE TIRES ? The outer edge of automotive tires will roll on their side ( AS THE SIDE WALLS ARE NOT AS FIRM ) during high speed turns & wear as you are describing. You can attempt to get away with automotive tires in a trailer application by either running much higher PSI ( AROUND 50 to 60 PSI ) of air pressure in the tire but in reality this can be very dangerous depending on load & not recommended or, put tubes in the tires & run 50 to 60 PSI air pressure. Not a guaranteed fix, but again depending on load may fix your problem. I am going to guess as you said the problem is just on the drivers side that you " DO NOT HAVE A TIRE PROBLEM " unless you are like the NASCAR GUY'S & only make left turns. Probably as ozarkgunner said a bent axle. Find a trailer & or automotive shop that can measure CAMBER - CASTER - & TOE IN on both wheels & you will know for sure. I would also suggest you have them check for a bent wheel or hub. Good luck !!!!!!! Rock View Resort Table Rock Lake Greg Pope, Owner/Operator & Fishing Guide
Wayne SW/MO Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Sounds like you have a bent axle Yup. It could be a spindle also, but in either case you axle components need some attention. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
buddygr53 Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Had same problem. Was told bent axle. I put a new axle complete with hubs. Still have same problem. I just rotate the tires. If you find a fix or find someone who can check the alignment let me know.
Gavin Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Any recommendations on a place for trailer tires in the St. Louis area? Pulled my travel trailer out of storage today...had a blow out...gonna buy 5 new. 185 80r13's...Tire brand recommendations appreciated.
dtrs5kprs Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Is it a single torsion axle? I know it's not a Ranger, but Ranger and others have had all kinds of trouble with undersized or bad torsion axles and bearing/tire failure. Seems like the 19'/200hp size boats are the worst about it. Basically too much boat on too little axle. Bill Richey went through many tires before Ranger finally put a bigger axle in for him.
Rodmaker Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Boats a hole in the water you pour money into. Trailer is just bad. As long as I dont tell the wife how much money I blow on those two things Im usually good to go! Just did trailer brakes two years ago. Ouch
fishinwrench Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Bent wheel ? Rotate them and see if the abnormal wear stays with the spindle or moves with the wheel.
