Gopher has the sole rights to the mushroom name. You can quickly find them online.

I have had a lot of luck in the 1/16 oz with a #2 Mustad hook. I use the Skinny Bear weedless heads from Tackle Warehouse. I've used the 1:16oz and 1/8 oz heads.

Wal Mart offers some Arkie heads that will work in a pinch. You WANT 1/16 oz and. Small hook. #2 or #1 seems best. 1/0 is the largest I'll go.

You really should get the Loc Tite Gel Super Glue (Blue / Gray bottle) as well. It really works better.

What advantage is a mushroom head over a ballhead?

Well...(and I am pouring button heads now, waiting for added lead to heat through)

There are differences between all three of those heads. The button head differs from the Gopher mushroom type head in that it does not have a collar. This means it falls at more of a head first angle, and that seems to work better when fishing dead on the bottom. In super shallow water, or for swimming, the more balanced fall of the mushroom with a barbed collar may be an advantage. No clue as to how many fish either of those differences translate into, but it is something you notice if you fish it a lot.

The lack of a collar also makes it easier to get the super squishy elaztech baits rigged. No tugging, twisting, heating is required. Both the button and mushroom heads provide a nice flat surface to glue the elaztech against.

The Gopher and Outkast heads are a little flatter up front, and they fall a little slower. Again, might be a plus for swimming in open water, does not help in 15'-25' when fish are on the bottom. The elaztech is more than buoyant enough to stand any of them up.

The addition of a weedguard is huge. Keeps you fishing, gives you the confidence to put it in places the other heads will not go. I started with open hooks, and now pour all of mine with guards. Just is more efficient.

A ball head will work. I still use a ball head for the 1/32oz situations, grass, water less than 5', etc. If you fish it side by side with the other heads you will likely see a difference, but it is hard to define. It just sort of does not fish quite the same as the others. Will not say quite as well, just not quite the same. Hard to specify.

Some of these things are very nuanced, but that is just the way the little rig is. If you fish it all day for days on end some of those nuances start to stick out. For instance, I really just figured out the balance thing this spring, and have several hundred hours of fishing it behind me.

I'll take your word that it's very nuanced, have to be with these size heads. I've can pour collarless ball heads with #1 hooks in 1/32,1/16, 3/32 and 3/16, maybe I'll add a wire weedguard. Thanks.

Steer clear of that 3/16oz head. It is just too much, makes the little deal plummet like a rock, kills the subtle action. And it hangs up much more often.

I tried some of those for the first time last month. Like one of our former Presidents, I tried it, didn't like it, and didn't use it again.

Another example of something I really thought would work is a tiny FB head, because hey, FB heads are great at TR. Poured some 1/16oz FB's up with nice Owner hooks and never caught the first fish on them. Just off in some way, the fall, the way it sat on the bottom, way it pulled along. No clue precisely, just did not work. I was shocked.

For whatever reason, the mushrooms and buttons are just the ketchup for the little rig's hot dog. I had never owned one until 2011, and never got my hands on a Gopher until that summer.
